One of Illinois State's most interesting buildings and the oldest one still standing on the Quad, Cook Hall was originally built to be a gymnasium. The governor at the time the building was constructed, John Altgeld, had a great liking for medieval castles and insisted that all new state university construction during his term in office resemble castles. You can find buildings resembling Cook Hall at many other state schools. Today the building is home to the School of Music and features large ensemble rehearsal spaces, private teaching studios, and practice rooms. There is even an instrument repair workshop.
