Welcome to Hamline University! Before we get started, let me explain the many ways you can explore our beautiful space. You can click on the forward facing arrow to start walking around. Founded in 1854, Hamline was Minnesota's first university and is now home to over 2,000 undergraduate and nearly 1500 graduate students. Where we're standing, Old Main Mall, is named after the most iconic building on campus, Old Main, which is on the National Registry of Historic Landmarks and at one point housed the entire university. This expanse of lawn is where students graduate each spring and is a popular spot for study groups, frisbee, and meeting up with friends during the year. It's even the site of one of our most popular annual student experiences, Theatre on the Lawn, which showcases a student-developed and -produced production.

Giddens Learning Center

What's now the Giddens Learning Center used to be the university's original library, built in 1907. The money was donated by Andrew Carnegie, making the remaining arches a historic marker of Hamline's inclusion in that prestigious network of libraries. Today, Giddens Learning Center, known as GLC, is made up of classrooms and faculty offices. Professors are required to hold office hours and strongly encourage students to attend them. Hamline is a liberal arts university, which means we take a multilayered, interdisciplinary approach to education. Students take classes in various academic areas and focus on thinking critically and collaboratively, problem solving, and practical application of what they've learned.

Robbins Science Center

At Hamline, Pipers can pursue more than 50 areas of study in close-knit, discussion-based learning environments. With a student-faculty ratio of 12:1 and an average class size of 22, students have immediate access to their professors and each other. Hamline is dedicated to high-impact learning: learning that takes place outside of the classroom. We call this LEAP—liberal education as practice—and it includes internships, collaborative or field-based research, student-teaching, study abroad, and service-learning, so students graduate with practical experience that can be applied to their future career. The Career Development Center also works with students to create an individualized academic-to-professional path, so students are always working toward their future.

Anderson Center, first floor

The Anderson Center was built in 2012 and meets LEED silver energy efficiency requirements, with solar panels, a rainwater-recycling roof, and motion-activated lights. Anderson is the main hub of student activity and is where Hamline's 70-plus student organizations are centered. There are three notable campus organizations housed in Anderson as well. The Women's Resource Center, focused on working toward a more equitable world for women; the Hedgeman Center for Diversity Initiatives, focused on creating and sustaining an inclusive community; and the Wesley Center for Spirituality, Service, and Social Justice, focused on spirituality as a springboard for bettering the world.

The Bishop's Bistro is the main dining facility on campus, with multiple stations for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that include vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Students can also eat on campus at Starbucks, Subway, and the Piper Grill and pick up light groceries at Leo's Corner on the first floor of Anderson. Meals can be purchased with cash, card, or a meal plan. The Hamline-Midway neighborhood is a foodie's dream, with Korean, Ethiopian, Greek, Mexican, and American restaurants all a short trek from campus. Hamline even has its own namesake sandwich at a local deli! For those looking for off-campus study sites, there are multiple coffee shops within walking distance.

Sorin Hall

Sorin was renovated in 2018 to bring student resources together in one place. Here, Pipers can pick up Hamline gear and course textbooks at the bookstore, play video games and shoot pool in the game room, pick up and mail packages at PiperXpress, and observe religious practices in the Gathering Space. Sorin is also the home to Hamline Public Safety. Public Safety staff is on call 24/7, and they offer escorts up to a mile off campus. Sorin Hall is just one of many convenient, accessible student spaces around campus. It's attached to one of the residence halls, which will be the topic of the next stop.

On-campus Living

One of the best ways to maximize your time as a college student is to live on campus. Studies show that students who live on campus even have higher four-year graduation rates. At Hamline, housing options include multiple residence halls and, for sophomores and older, apartment-style living. Along with standard furniture, all on-campus housing includes a microwave, a refrigerator with small freezer, cable, internet, laundry facilities, and social and study lounges. Special interest housing options include honors, advocacy and action, quiet lifestyle, multicultural and international interest, and same- and multi-gender floors. Outside of the residence halls and apartments, students have access to volleyball, basketball, and tennis courts.

East Hall

East Hall is where Pipers can find Student Administrative Services, which houses Student Accounts, Registration and Records, the cashier's office, and Financial Aid. Here, students can sit down one on one with staff members to ask any questions they may have about their accounts. East Hall also houses the School of Business, which offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Prospective undergraduate students can apply for early admission to the School of Business and, if accepted, benefit from individualized academic attention their first day on campus. This personalized approach to learning pays off—Hamline accounting majors consistently earn the highest or close to highest CPA pass rate in all of Minnesota.

West Hall

In West Hall, students can access a variety of resources, such as the Residential Life Office, Dean of Students Office, Orientation Offices, Disability Services, Veterans Center, chaplain, and rabbi. They can also access the School of Education, which offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. West Hall is home to the Center for Justice and Law, which offers events, education, and training for community members that focuses on advancing justice by developing creative, concrete, and equitable solutions to legal issues and policy concerns. In the lower level of West Hall, commuter students can find a lounge, lockers, tables, and any other resources they may need.

Blue Garden

The Blue Garden is a student favorite. Surrounded by bright blooms and the soothing sound of the fountain, Pipers come here to relax, study, hang a hammock, and lounge with friends. And it's only one of the many beautiful outdoors destinations students have access to. From campus, students can walk or bike to Como Zoo and Conservatory. At Como, you can paddle board and canoe on the lake, run and walk trails, see live music, grab a bite to eat, golf, and say hello to the polar bears. Best of all, it's free. Minnehaha Falls, the Mississippi River, and the 60-plus Minnesota state and national parks are popular destinations too.

Bush Memorial Library

At Bush Memorial Library, students have access to quiet and group study areas, reference books, and computers. The basement of the library houses the Writing Center, where students can work one on one with writing specialists on assignments from inception up to the final polish, as well as speciality labs such as the digital media arts lab and Hamline TV studio. The Center for Academic Success and Achievement, which offers personalized academic advising and tutoring, is here as well. Students should always feel welcome to make an appointment to discuss academic options and opportunities.

Sundin Music Hall

Sundin Music Hall was a gift of passion—in more ways than one. The money was donated by two alum who met and fell in love during their time at Hamline, and the theatre has state of the arts equipment and acoustics. Concerts and lectures open to the Hamline community are held here year round, and students can take music and voice lessons here, regardless of if they're a music major or not. Students can also try out for one of our six ensemble groups: A Cappella Choir, Hamline University Chorale, Hamline Winds, Jazz Ensemble, Oratorio Society, and Orchestra.

Drew Fine Arts Center

Drew Fine Arts is the main hub for theatre, dance, and studio arts. The Anne Simley Theatre hosts between five and seven student shows per year along with a theater and film festival and a dance ensemble performance, and students can participate in productions regardless of their major. As well as the theatre, Drew holds art studios and the Soeffker Gallery, which has a rotating collection featuring works from Hamline professors as well as a permanent collection, which features pieces by such famous artists as Picasso, Goya, and Andy Warhol. Each spring, there's an exhibition featuring senior artists' finest works.

Klas Field

Piper Athletics is home to 20 DIII varsity sports, 18 of which are in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Our award-winning teams make a name for themselves both on the field and in their fields, and athletics coaches and staff are fully dedicated to both halves of the student-athlete title. As well as training together, teams volunteer in the community together, and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee is a student group that focuses on student-athlete wellbeing on campus. For Pipers who want to get involved but not necessarily at a varsity level, Hamline offers club and intramural sports. These are student-run and include rock climbing, volleyball, yoga, and dance.

Walker Fieldhouse

Walker Fieldhouse is the exercise and wellness hub for students, faculty, and staff. With a pool, an indoor track, an exercise room equipped with weights and machines, racquetball and basketball courts, and an exercise studio, there's something to get every body moving. Different group classes are offered throughout the year as well as personal training sessions. Physical wellness is only half of Hamline's dedication to overall student wellness, though. Included in the cost of tuition, Pipers have access to campus physicians, psychiatrists, and counselors. At Hamline, we know the mind operates best when the body and soul are taken care of as well.

CHS Field

Hamline has two professional sport partnerships, the first of which is with the Saint Paul Saints. In 2016, Hamline's men's baseball team officially called CHS Field, located in Lowertown, Saint Paul, their home field. This 6,000-seat venue sits across from the Saint Paul farmer's market, just two blocks from Mears Park and three blocks up from the Mississippi River. Included in this partnership are Hamline-themed nights at the Saints, where Pipers are celebrated during Saints' home games. It's a great opportunity for students to gather together during summer months, watch some baseball, show their Piper pride, and explore downtown.

TRIA Rink

The second of Hamline's professional partnerships is with the Minnesota Wild. In 2018, when TRIA Rink opened as the Wild's official new practice facility, it was also named home ice for Hamline men's and women's hockey. This elevated rink has incredible views of downtown during the day and at night, and its location in the heart of downtown makes it a great stop during a full day of activity.
