At GW, our classrooms have more than four walls; they have gallery halls, Capitol domes, low tides, and high bays. Our students make the most of our D.C. location to support and enhance their in-class learning, putting knowledge in action and preparing them for careers and graduate study. Gelman Library, on the Foggy Bottom Campus, offers a vast amount of resources - and study spaces. It is home to Academic Commons, where students can find tutoring, brush up on study or writing skills, prepare for professional exams, or find assistance with language learning, technology, or research.

GW Traditions

University Yard is the largest, open green space you’ll find here on Foggy Bottom. “U-Yard” is home to various hallmark events and GW traditions. For starters, our student organization fairs, Fall Fest, and Spring Fling take place here. On an average day, you can find GW students studying or playing frisbee on this lawn. Other GW traditions include our Welcome Day of Service, Vern Harvest, Midnight Breakfast, GW's Inaugural Ball, and of course, Commencement on the National Mall! GW's School of Media and Public Affairs is home to GW’s Journalism and Mass Communications and Political Communication programs, as well as the Jack Morton Auditorium, a large theater space complete with a full production studio that frequently hosts CNN Town Halls and other televised specials. When not studying at Gelman, you may find students in the University Student Center. GW’s student center is home to student organizations and resource offices. Plus, it's the place to grab a bite, buy GW swag, visit the health center, or set up your study abroad or internship. The terrace houses one of our flagship campus events each fall, the MSSC Block Party, which brings members of the GW community together to kick off each academic year. When it’s not being used for campus events, the terrace is a great outdoor space for members of the GW community looking to get some fresh air!

Welcome to GW's Academic Center -- the cross section between Rome, Phillips, and Smith Halls. Our academic opportunities expand far beyond these spaces, but since Phillips Hall is home to the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences’ Undergraduate Advising office, it’s a great place to start discussing academics here at GW. Finding Community

GW students can find community in a variety of ways, including through our Multicultural Student Services Center -- or MSSC, the Nashman Center for Civic Engagement, and the Hillel Center. The MSSC and the LGBTQIA+ Resource Center enhance our community with numerous on-campus events, community discussions, study spaces, and more. The Nashman Center coordinates our Welcome Day of Service, service-learning courses, and service opportunities throughout the year. GW Hillel also has a great presence on our campus to provide the Jewish students of GW the tools they need to lead meaningful, vibrant Jewish lives.

Living on Foggy Bottom

Located in the heart of the District, our Foggy Bottom campus is home to the majority of GW undergraduates, across dozens of residence halls. Ranging from single rooms to suite-style living, there is sure to be an option for you! Several of our Foggy Bottom halls are converted apartment buildings, so students often enjoy in-suite kitchens after sophomore year. Only one GW residence includes floor-by-floor general restrooms; most include bathrooms within your suite or shared with just one neighboring room. Students apply for housing each year and are assigned to a residence hall and room based on preferences for buildings, room types, and potentially identified roommates.

The Elliott School of International Affairs is just steps from some of the most influential U.S., international, and nongovernmental organizations in the world. Offering both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in international affairs, Elliott continues to innovate for today’s data-driven world by building a degree equipped specifically for it. We strive to cultivate a community of global citizens here at GW, in our Elliott school and beyond. About 15% of our GW student body hails from over 150 countries worldwide, and nearly half of our students have an international experience during their GW career.

Welcome to our Mount Vernon Campus! Imagine that you've travelled here like a GW student, via a quick 15-minute ride on the Mount Vernon Express -- also known as the Vex. The Fountain Quad is the heart and center of the Mount Vernon Campus. It's surrounded by Academic Building, Ames Hall, Eckles Library, and residences like Sommers, Clark, Cole and Hensley Halls. The "Vern" is home to about a third of GW first-year students, but you'll find students of all years enjoying flagship GW events like Fountain Day and Vern Harvest right here on the Vern's Fountain Quad.

Living on Mount Vernon

The Mount Vernon Campus houses a third of our first-year class, including students in the University Honors Program and our living-learning communities. Here, students enjoy a small campus environment nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood of Northwest D.C., plus amenities such as a dining hall, athletic facilities, a black box theater, and recording studio! West Hall offers community kitchens, laundry facilities, and lounges on every floor. Students can choose between 1-person, 3-person, and 4-person units and all have private bathrooms. Four "Hillside" halls provide students with the option to live in a single or double room, with adjoining, shared, and common bathroom options.
