Cathedral of Granada

The cathedral of Granada is one of the most prominent buildings of the city. It is located at the east side of the central park of Granada (Parque Colón). The building has been rebuilt several times after it was first constructed as a parochial church in 1583. The building was completely destroyed by William Walker in 1856. At the end of the nineteenth century construction of the new cathedral was ceased due to lack of funds. With new plans from the architect Andrés Zappata the construction continued again until 1915, when the cathedral was as good as finished. The neoclassical style can be easily recognized in the facade of the building. Within the building there are three naves and four chapels. The La Merced Church is located only a couple blocks away from the central park of Granada. This church, originally built in 1534, is flanked by a large tower that houses the church bells. This tower of La Merced Church is open to the public, and for a small fee you can ascend the stairs and reach the roof of the church. From here, you have a great city view of Granada. You can easily spot the cathedral, as well as other large buildings like the San Francisco church. Within the panoramic view you can also locate the Mombacho Volcano, as well as Lake Nicaragua with the islets and Zapatera island not far away from the shore. Ascending the La Merced Church not only provides you with a superb city view, it is also a great place to take pictures of the beautiful city and the surroundings.
