Digital Learning and Media Design is dedicated to training the next generation of media professionals. With an emphasis on education in the real world, Media Studies students exclusively produce This Week at GSU, a weekly segment on the latest university news. The department has also inspired the university's newly developed Center for Media Ethics.

Library

At any time of day, the GSU Library is a hub of activity with students researching and studying. With technology equipped group study rooms and a balcony for collaborative work, the library is a hotspot for student success. The resources of the library are extensive and include your membership to i-Share, which provides access to books and articles from the catalogs of 90 libraries across Illinois.

Technology and Computer Science

Every discipline on the Governors State campus utilizes technology to help students succeed in their studies and prepare for their careers. Introduced in 2018, our Virtual Reality, or VR, lab uses Oculus, a system that allows students to develop virtual reality content and enjoy VR experience. One student recently created an experience that made the user feel like she was the size of a mouse in a life-size kitchen!

Writing Center

Exceptional writing skills will serve you well beyond your college experience, supporting your growth throughout your chosen profession. GSU offers a variety of services to help students strengthen their writing skills. Here in the Writing Center, students of every major and skill level can seek feedback on their academic writing and suggestions for revision. Other writing resources include Supplemental Instruction, a program that embeds peer tutors into First-Year Writing courses, Graduate Writing Boot Camps, which give graduate students the opportunity to work on their capstone, thesis, or dissertation in a distraction-free environment, and consultations with writing consultants, either in person or online.

Center for Performing Arts

Governors State offers a variety of cultural experiences to enrich your student experience. Here, we are in the Center for Performing Arts, named the Best Live Entertainment Venue in the region by local residents. The state-of-the-art venue provides our Theatre and Performance Studies students a forum to practice their craft during three annual productions, in addition to serving as a popular destination for touring artists. More than 50,000 patrons witness, or participate in, the transformative power of live performing arts annually.

Environmental and Life Sciences

The Biology Field Station provides students interested in ecology, botany, and zoology with access to conduct research on more than 140 acres (and three trails) managed by GSU's Biology department. The preserve includes a variety of ecosystems, including wetland, forests, prairie relics, old fields, and early successional woods. Hypotheses investigated by GSU faculty members as well as both undergraduate and graduate level students includes urban expansion, conservation, and environmental health.

Arts and Humanities

We are standing in the ceramics studio: one of many studios on campus dedicated to our Bachelor and new Master of Fine Arts programs. During the week, our art students have access to studios 16 hours a day. Other studios on campus include painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, and photography. Many art students also participate in student clubs and organizations such as Art Forum and Reconstructed, the university literary journal, allowing them to sell and publish their works during their student experience.

Health and Human Services

The nursing labs at GSU were part of a total renovation of the Science, Health Science, and Technology wing in 2015. Nursing students practice critical nursing interventions using state of the art equipment including true-to-life simulators. The simulators mimic the responses of patients in real health care settings. Other health labs that were part of the renovation include Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Communication Disorders.

Honors Program

GSU's Honors Program offers an enriched curriculum for students seeking a greater challenge. Students in the Honors Program are eligible for exclusive Pathways, which are curricula designed to help students reach their academic goals sooner. Many undergraduate honors students have presented their research at both regional and national conferences.

Your success as a student starts with your physical and mental well-being. As a GSU student, you have access to our Health & Student Counseling Center that offers free mental health services and services provided by Advocate Health Care. Our medical and behavioral health teams work with you as partners, and with our staff consisting of a licensed psychologist, licensed professional counselors, and master and doctoral interns who are committed to providing confidential, compassionate, and high quality care.

Athletics and Recreation Center

Here, we are located in GSU's Athletics and Recreation Center, home of the 2018 men's basketball CCAC champions. In addition to men's and women's basketball, GSU offers men's and women's cross country, golf, and soccer, as well as women's volleyball. Students also have full access to our Olympic-size pool, cardio equipment, free weights, and racquetball.

Prairie Place

Built in 2014 and set within the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park, Prairie Place is GSU's on-campus housing facility that embodies learning in the midst of art. Here, you'll develop lifelong relationships with fellow students, attend campus programs, and enjoy close proximity to your classes. The Family Development Center at GSU serves a dual purpose: students in education, health, and human services programs receive hands-on training opportunities, while students with children of their own have access to high-quality childcare for infants, preschoolers, summer camp, and after-school hours. Designed by educators, the FDC models the best practices in Early Childhood Education and draws extensively on the expertise of university faculty and staff in Early Childhood Education, Nursing, Communications Disorders, Psychology and Counseling.
