Welcome to George Fox University (or GFU), home of the Bruins! Founded in 1885, GFU is a first-tier, private, Christian university. Among its accolades and rankings are "Best Value" by Forbes and inclusion in "America's Best Colleges," assembled by US News & World Report. Among GFU's list of distinguished alumni are top corporate executives, celebrated writers, athletic leaders and President Herbert Hoover, who attended class back when the name of the University was Friends Pacific Academy. Join me now and explore just a few of the highlights of this welcoming, 108-acre campus in Newberg, Oregon.

The 65-foot Centennial Clock Tower is both a celebration of GFU's first 100 years, and a constant visual marker of the heart of campus. The tower was designed by acclaimed architect Pietro Belluschi, and its bells chime during the day, on the quarter hour. The Tower sits in the center of the campus quad where students relax, gather and organize periodic events.

Many science departments, including Biology, Chemistry and Engineering, are based here at the Edwards-Holman Science Center. Inside are classrooms, labs and a lecture hall, where faculty and renowned guest scientists hold court. Additional labs and offices are located in historic Wood-Mar Hall next door, connected to the Science Center via atrium.

The Stevens Center is an award-winning facility primarily dedicated to student services. Inside you can take care of most of your "business" stops on campus: the Registrar, Admissions, Financial Services and Career Services. The offices of Student Life and Housing/Residence Life are located here as well. George Fox is widely recognized for sending a high number of its students abroad to study before graduation, and the Stevens Center is where you might get inspiration; inside are the Center for Global Studies and the Center for Peace and Justice.

This is the Murdoch Learning Resource Center, otherwise known as the Library. Standout features of the three-story building include a 24-hour study room, periodic art exhibits, and special collections on Herbert Hoover, Quakers – the founders of the University – and Peace Studies. Students can access the library's collection of more than 130,000 items onsite, as well as the resources at GFU's Portland Center, the "Summit" consortium, and millions of resources online. Computers are available in the first floor Commons, and study spaces are available on both the first and second floors.

One thing you're bound to remember about the Lemmons Center is its unusual layout. The building debuted in the mid-1960's and was groundbreaking at that time. Classrooms for the ESL, Math, Computer Science, and Family and Consumer Science programs line the perimeter of the structure, while offices and a 165-seat lecture hall form the center.

Brougher Hall is home to George Fox's Department of Art and Design. Inside are classrooms, offices and studios supporting several visual arts disciplines. Students can major in Graphic Design or Studio Art and access the latest technology and unique facilities, including an anagama kiln for ceramics. But of course, you don't have to be an art major to get involved in GFU's arts programming.

The Student Union Building, officially named Heacock Commons, is where the Bruin community converges throughout the day. This is where you'll find the main campus dining room and café hangouts, where you can check your mail, shop for class and dorm necessities and access student leadership. The building also serves as home base for campus media including the student-run KFOX radio station, the yearbook and the student-run Crescent Newspaper.

Pennington Residence Hall is home to about 100 first-year GFU students. The Hall has two floors of suites, each housing male and female residents in separate wings. Pennington residents enjoy onsite laundry and kitchen on each floor as well as a central lounge and study area. The Hall is also conveniently located just south of the Student Union Building.

Hoover Academic Building is headquarters for GFU's School of Business. It's also home to several departments including Religion, Undergraduate Psychology, Sociology/Social Work and Nursing. In addition to classrooms, the multipurpose facility features an atrium, computer and nursing labs, an observation room, and the highest-capacity lecture hall on campus. There are two other cultural draws inside that make the building a popular destination: the Hoover-Hatfield Library and the Roger and Mildred Minthorne Gallery.

Wheeler Sports Center is where fans come to cheer on the Northwest Conference Bruin Basketball and Volleyball teams. Miller gymnasium, where home games are played, seats up to 2,750. The Center houses two additional basketball courts as well as racquetball courts and comprehensive strength and cardio facilities. Students also come to the Center for health classes and for intramural league competitions.
