From freshman orientation to crossing the stage at graduation and every day in between, the great lawn is at the heart of it all. The buildings you see are where you'll have classes, develop meaningful relationships, pull all-nighters studying and make memories for life. It's also where you'll learn to lead a life of significance. Christopher Newport is the kind of place you have to see to believe. After you take the virtual tour, come visit us in person. It's the best way to interact with our students and professors and to learn all about who we are as we get to know you. We can't wait to meet you! Student Life (David Student Union)

Christopher Newport is student led and student driven, and the David Student Union is the hub of student life. The Captains Locker has all your school swag, and the Center for Community Engagement empowers students to engage in service activities both on and off campus. The Study Abroad Office facilitates opportunities for students around the world. Students pick up care packages and online orders at the mailroom. The Crow's Nest offers students a place to relax and features a game room and lounge area. Students serve on the Campus Activities Board to plan all kinds of exciting events, as well as the Honor Council to uphold our community standards.

We only admit students who can graduate in four years, and Christopher Newport Hall houses all of the services vital to your success from admission through graduation and beyond. These services are available to Captains for life. It's here that you can find the Center for Academic Success, which offers workshops on important skills like time management and effective study strategies, peer mentoring and one-on-one tutoring to help you make the jump from high school to college and stay on top and the Center for Career Planning, which can help you choose a major, build a resume and land a great internship or job.

Christopher Newport Hall is a one-stop shop for students and includes the Admission Welcome Center, Financial Aid, Housing, the registrar and several other offices that are here to serve you. This is a certified green building and includes many energy saving features from recycled building materials and smart lighting to water conservation systems.

Residence Life

Christopher Newport has some of the newest and best residence halls in the country. Freshmen live the suite life, and each room has a microwave and fridge, cable hookup and easy access to a washer and dryer. Every residence has a security card entry system. Each year you become more and more independent until you live in an apartment with a private bedroom and bathroom, full kitchen and a washer and dryer. All students, even freshmen, can bring their cars and park on campus.

Trible Library

Trible Library is the place for research, learning conversation or quiet study 24/7. Einstein's Cafe is open for business when you need to unwind or get your daily dose of caffeine and a quick bite. The library has nearly a million volumes, including a variety of special collections. Librarians are always available to help find the resources you need to plan your research. And if you're interested in multimedia, you can visit the media center to reserve cameras, GoPros, microphones and more.

The food on campus is delicious and we have so many options. Our two full-service dining halls have it all, including vegan and gluten-free options. There are also several small places where you can grab a sandwich, salad or sushi. We even have our own Chick-fil-a. Einstein's Cafe is a great spot for a cup of Starbucks coffee or some of the biggest brownies around. Heading off campus? You can load your student I.D. car with Captain’s Cash and use it like a debit card at restaurants all over town.

The world is changing. To launch your dream career or get into graduate school, you need to be a tech savvy problem solver who can think deeply and write well, and talk about the complicated ethical issues we face as a society. Our programs can help you get there. From digital humanities to fine and performing arts, you can go down a number of paths to prepare for an exciting career, regardless of which major you choose. You'll take a set of diverse liberal arts courses to create a solid foundation, and you narrow in focus before declaring a major at the end of your sophomore year.

Athletics

Christopher Newport hosts one of the most successful Division III athletic programs in the nation year in and year out. Regardless of division, the Captains have the highest winning percentage in Virginia, and we have some of the best sports facilities of any university in America for Division III. In 2021-2022, the Captains won two national championships in women's soccer and softball and a number of other teams finished their seasons ranked in the top 25 nationally.

STEM + Undergraduate Research

Christopher Newport offers a unique opportunity for students to study the STEM disciplines within a small residential liberal arts and science environment. Our faculty are engineers, scientists and mathematicians who study and research nearly every high-tech field. You can major in physics, computer science, engineering, math, you name it. Many students have the opportunity to get cutting-edge experience by working at NASA or the particle accelerators at Jefferson Lab, both of which are located close to campus. CNU is the only non-doctoral university in Virginia chosen to participate in the Amazon Tech Talent Investment Program because of the strong programs in our computer science, computer engineering and cybersecurity.

Christopher Newport has an internationally accredited business school, ranked within the top 100 in the country with majors in accounting, finance, management and marketing. There's a trading room with access to real-world tools like an LED stock ticker and an interactive video wall. You’ll learn skills that will help you land a great job after graduation, such as data analytics or supply chain management, as well as networking, personal marketing and interview skills. Our students routinely score in the 95th percentile on the business major field test and consistently win entrepreneurship and case competitions against some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country.

At most schools, you have to wait until grad school to do serious research. At CNU, we focus our attention and resources on the undergraduate experience. No large classes taught by a teaching assistant here. Your professors will guide you every step of the way. You can write and direct your performance, research the stock market, and manage a fund, or build a new kind of unmanned aerial vehicle. Whatever your major, you'll find an opportunity to be an active participant in your education. We even have summer research programs, where you can get paid for your work with faculty members, and many students find themselves co authoring books and papers.

Communications, Sociology, Social Work, & Anthropology

Programs in social sciences focus on human interaction and organization in a variety of contexts. They study the who, the what, the when, and the why of what people do, or in some cases, what they should do. Students learn to question assumptions and find innovative ways to examine problems. Our students can engage in many hands-on learning experiences, such as WCNU Radio and our Captain's Log newspaper. From communication and leadership to criminology and social work. A number of personal and career-focused programs can set you up for success in life and work.

Signature Programs

Students in the President's Leadership and the Honors programs are top performers with a passion for service and leading others, and they receive our best scholarships of up to $10,000 per year. Leadership students learn about the process of leadership to both lead and follow more effectively. Honor students’ general education requirements are reduced because of the multidisciplinary seminars they take, which allow for more academic exploration. Students in both programs enjoy preferential housing and registration and receive a separate scholarship to study abroad. Students can join advising tracks for pre-law, pre-med and pre-health for access to mentors, field experiences, L-SAT and M-CAT test prep and early acceptance to medical school.

Explore the natural world at Christopher Newport, whether plants and animals or life at the molecular level. Christopher Newport offers majors in biology, chemistry, environmental science, kinesiology and more. Our campus is surrounded by rivers and the Chesapeake Bay, so this is a great place to study waterways and all kinds of aquatic life. Forbes Hall has everything from greenhouses to a donor lab, so you can fully explore the scientific realm that inspires you.

Fitness (The Freeman Center)

It's easy to stay on top of your health and wellness at the Freeman Center. There's a huge gym where you can workout, play basketball, or take a yoga or mindfulness class. There are a ton of indoor and outdoor intramural and club sports you can play from ice hockey or rugby to the ultimate disc or equestrian. Christopher Newport offers a health clinic and full service counseling center and partners with Riverside Health System to support the well-being of students.

Performing Arts - Ferguson Center for the Arts

Since opening in 2005, the Ferguson Center has entertained more than a million people by presenting the finest performing arts in the world. Designed by the firm of internationally renowned architect I.M. Pei, The Ferguson Center features the 1700-seat Diamonstein Concert Hall, the 500-seat Peebles Theater, and a 250-seat experimental theater. It is home to the Department of Performing Arts. The facility also includes studios, workshops and rehearsal spaces for students to hone their craft with expert instruction.

Fine Arts (Mary M Torggler Fine Arts Center)

The Mary M Torggler Fine Arts Center hosts exhibitions, art classes, lectures and gallery talks. You can bring your creative vision alive here in studios for painting and drawing, ceramics, photography and more. There's a main gallery for major exhibitions and an interactive children's gallery, a community art gallery and studio classrooms for academic and public art classes, workshops and camps.

The Pope Chapel

The Pope Chapel welcomes people of all faiths by hosting spiritual activities, lectures, music and other events throughout the year. Many alumni come back and get married here.

Greek Life

In Greek Village, fraternity and sorority members live together with their brothers and sisters under one roof in either suites or single rooms. Greek Village is unique because each house is dedicated to a single organization and includes a chapter room where members can gather for meetings, space for quiet study, as well as casual gathering areas. All of the Greek houses are anchored by a beautiful green space perfect for events and recreation.
