Welcome to Dorothy Adkins Middle School! AMS is the Corpus Christi Independent School District’s newest middle school located on the city’s southside and is home to the Adkins Wolverines. Adkins Middle School is a state-of-the-art facility which includes a number of academic and athletic amenities. When you step into Dorothy Adkins Middle School, you will enter the school near the front office. One highlight of the new campus is the emphasis on safety and security. Visitors to Dorothy Adkins Middle School must first enter the office area to check-in and receive a pass before making their way through the campus. From the front entry you can access all areas of the school including the Media Center, fine arts, cafeteria and classrooms.

The AMS Media Center has more than 5,400 square feet with dedicated area for for online research with 20 computer work stations. The space also includes small study sections for individual or small group study sessions. The Media Center shelving holds approximately 14,000 books. Across from the Media Center are three separate study nooks with collaborative furniture for small group instruction.

The Cafetorium of Adkins Middle School is designed as a multipurpose use area in additional to daily student lunches. When the cafeteria is not serving lunch or breakfast, the area can be used for school assemblies, student performances, and serve as a meeting area. The Cafetorium Stage is easily accessible to areas behind the stage as well as the fine arts areas for student band, choral, or theatre performances.

Dorothy Adkins Middle School classroom wings are designed to group students in “Pods”. Each Pod is associated with a different grade level which provides a smaller supportive atmosphere for students. Each classroom wing has an open, collaboration space that can be utilized for small group studies. In addition, the areas have computers and personal device hook-ups for group projects. Inside the classrooms the students desks are designed to encourage a 21st century learning environment. Classrooms are designed to be areas of critical thinking, communication, collaboration and technology-rich hubs. The campus also boasts two art rooms that are the largest in the District. Each have access to a ceramic Kiln for creating pottery.

The science labs continue the collaborative atmosphere by including the class and lab in one room. Teachers can easily transition from teaching about cells to students dissecting cells through a microscope without the need for students to change classrooms or move to a different area. Each Science Lab has a prep room area adjacent to the classroom. All labs are equipped with wall-mounted science equipment drains and sink areas for student groups to complete various hands-on science experiments.

One unique feature, different from our other middle schools, is each Pod, or grade level, has its own school administration. Each Pod includes an Assistant Principal, Counselor and additional support staff. These individuals are housed in each of the classroom wings. The decentralization of the administrative staff allows for students and administrators to collaborate and build relationships. It also provides easier access when counseling, discipline and other administrative services are needed.

Continuing with the 21st century learning design of Adkins Middle School, the Collaborative Areas provide large spaces for differentiated instruction. These areas are equipped with computers that can be utilized for research and group projects. Teachers can take the instruction outside the walls of the classroom to a larger space that can be utilized for project based learning or smaller group study. Students enjoy the collaborative areas to study or work on group projects.

As you make your way to the Fine Arts area of Adkins Middle School, you will notice areas for band, choral and theatre arts. The Choir and Orchestra room has two practice rooms and separate storage areas for instruments, uniforms and a music library. The Band Room also has separate practice areas and storage for band instruments, music and additional storage. The Black Box Theatre includes a state-of-the-art Control Room with theatrical lighting and rooms for props, costumes and dressing areas. All fine arts areas have easy access to the Cafetorium stage which comes in handy for student performances.

Adkins Middle School offers a complete spectrum of middle school competition athletic opportunities for students. We are currently located in the 500-seat capacity gym and is home to the Wolverines, the school’s mascot. Amenities of the athletics area includes locker room areas with restroom and shower facilities for Girl’s Athletics, Boy’s Athletics, Girl’s PE and Boy’s PE. The Weight Room is equipped with premier workout equipment to aid trainers and athletes. The training room is equipped with the latest treatment methods for caring of athletes. Outside you will find basketball courts, a practice field, and UIL compliant tennis courts.
