Whether you want to perform the newest rendition of Macbeth on stage, debate alongside your team in tournaments across the globe, or plan the next acapella coffeehouse night, you'll find plenty of kindred spirits at Brandeis. At the heart of this dynamic social life is the Shapiro Campus Center. The Shapiro Campus Center is open to students 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It houses a cafe, student art exhibition gallery, rehearsal spaces, meeting rooms for the over 280 clubs, a computer library, a 250-seat undergraduate theater, our campus bookstore, and even a cozy fireplace. Here you will also find our media groups including Brandeis Television, WBRS - the campus radio station and multiple other news publications.
Sherman Dining Hall features traditional all-you-care-to-eat dining. Completely renovated, Sherman Hall boasts Kosher and non-Kosher food, including freshly baked pasta and pizza, deli choices served on freshly baked bread, ice cream, and homemade soups. It is located underneath The Stein, which features casual sit-down dining in a fun and cozy environment. Additionally, The Stein offers a late night breakfast buffet to satisfy your middle-of-the-night cravings.
There are ten on-campus residential quadrangles with a Community Advisor on each floor who creates hall programs and serves as a resource for all residents. Most first-year students live in Massell or North Quad, usually with one or two roommates. Both quads are strategically situated near dining halls, classrooms, and social and recreational facilities. Massell, pictured here, is located in lower campus near Sherman dining hall, the Shapiro Campus Center, Spingold Theater, Admissions, the Shapiro Science Center, and Chapels Field.
Chapels Pond is loacted in the center of the three Univsersity chapels and is one of the most serene and peaceful places on campus. Equal is size and designed in such a way as to never let one cast a shadow on another, the three chapels serve as a testament to and daily reminder of Brandeis' continuing commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusivity.
In front of you is the award-winning Shapiro Science Center which opened its doors in 2009. The five-story center features 12 teaching and research labs, classrooms for most science courses and a 3-D visualization projector. The center also includes a two-level electronic library, conference rooms and spaces for faculty-student discussions. Alongside state-of-the-art equipment, the Shapiro Science Center was designed with environmental sustainability in mind, and the building utilizes daylight-harvesting technology, heat-recovery systems and earth-friendly paints and adhesives.
With over 1.2 million printed volumes, 43,000 journals and 3,500 films, the Brandeis Library system houses an ever-growing collection in the creative arts, humanities, government documents, Judaica, and social sciences. Research materials are extremely accessible to students due to the online availability of resources, and additional resources are made available through the Boston Library Consortium and the Interlibrary Loan system. The library offers services for students including a listening center, computer labs, after-hours study rooms, film-editing studios, as well as the professionally staffed Writing Center.
The Usdan Student Center contains two major dining halls, a post office, a game room, administrative offices, and plenty of meeting spaces. It is a busy meeting place for students and faculty - especially between classes or during lunch. The convenience store, also located inside Usdan, is open until 2 a.m. every day and carries everything from laundry detergent to a midnight snacks. Usdan also houses the Hiatt Career Center, Community Living offices and Student Financial Services.
North Quad is the second option for first-year residence halls. North Quad sits at the top of campus, with corridor style halls and lounges furnished with kitchens, air hockey tables, and TVs available to all. It is conveniently located next to the Rabb Academic Quad, housing most humanities classes, and the Kutz Hall administrative building, and International Students & Scholars Office, amongst others. Furthermore, North is only steps from the Usdan Student Center.
Brandeis's main academic quad, the Rabb Academic Quad, incorporates lecture halls, small classrooms and professor offices all within walking distance of one another. The academic experience at Brandeis focuses on intimate class sizes and fostering strong relationships with professors.
The Mandel Center for the Humanities speaks to Brandeis's commitment to the study of the human condition. The four-story building houses a 100-seat theater, a tiered lecture hall, seminar rooms, open-office workstations, a reading room and even a rooftop garden. The building also symbolizes Brandeis's commitment to an interdisciplinary learning environment.
Opened in August of 2018, Skyline Residence Hall is now home to 164 sophomore students. With an emphasis on environmental sustainability and energey effeciency, Skyline's heating and cooling systems are powered by 40 geothermal wells while the roof of the building is home to newly-installed solar panels. The buidling gets its name from the panoramic views of Boston residents are treated to right outside their windows. In addition to the residences, Skyline also houses common spaces, study rooms, and kitchen area for student use.
The Brandeis Castle was built to resemble many of the castles that one might find in Scotland. It is home to Chum's Coffee House, which is rumored to be inspiration for Perk's Coffee from the popular sitcom Friends, a show created by Brandeis alumni. At Chum's, students can enjoy delicious tea and coffee drinks while attending a variety of nightly performances ranging from acapella shows to improv comedy nights. With its quirky characteristics and spectacular view of Boston, the castle and its coffeehouse make for a unique late night social hub on campus. The Castle is currently undergoing a beautification project, and it set to re-open with brand new, modernized residential facilities in 2018.
The Intercultural Center (ICC) was established in 1992 by a team of students and faculty with a vision to create a community space for students of all cultures to learn and grow together. Having recently celebrated its 25 year anniversary, the ICC has grown tremendously since its founding and is now home to sixteen student-run organizations on campus. The ICC space serves a myriad of purposes from hosting cultural shows and performance nights to social events and board meetings. At the ICC, students are able to celebrate and honor the unique traits of their culture, as well as engage in nuanced dialogue with a vibrant community about the societal changes happening in our globalized world.
The Rose Art Museum houses the largest collection of modern art in New England and one of the finest collections in all of America. It is also home to Chris Burden's Light of Reason, a permanent sculpture inspired by three torches, three hills and three Hebrew letters from Brandeis University's seal, while the title is borrowed from a well-known quote by Louis D. Brandeis. Housing works by artists such as Marc Chagall and Andy Warhol, the Rose seeks to disseminate knowledge of modern and contemporary art in an effort to enrich educational, cultural, and artistic communities regionally, nationally, and internationally. Admission is free to students, and the museum also offers internships for those interested in museum work, studio art and art history. Students can even rent various pieces to hang in their residence hall rooms for a rental fee of only $5.
Brandeis' International Business School has a renowned reputation for academic excellence. By teaching rigorous business, finance and economics coursework, connecting students to best practices and immersing them in international experiences, Brandeis IBS prepares exceptional individuals from around the globe to become principled professionals in companies and public institutions worldwide.
The Brandeis Department of Music offers students the opportunity to experience music as both a discipline for scholarship and a process of creation and performance. At the center of this department, *Slosberg* offers multiple practice rooms, a professional performance hall, and instrument rentals. Slosberg is also home to the childhood piano of Leonard Bernstein, famous American composer and early faculty member. It's rumored he may have even written the musical West Side Story from campus.
In front of you is Spingold Theater, rumored to be built to resemble a top hat. Spingold is home to the Theater Arts department and houses multiple dance studios, an art gallery and performance spaces. The cutting-edge professional Brandeis Theater Company produces five professional-grade productions each season. In addition, the Undergraduate Theater Collective, which is the student-run theater organization, hosts over 5 performances a month in the Shapiro Theater in the Shapiro Campus Center.
A Division III institution, our teams boast members who are both scholars and athletes. In front of you is the *Gosman* Athletics complex, complete with weight rooms, top-of-the-line fitness equipment and multiple sport courts and tracks. In fact, the basketball court was once the primary practice space for the Boston Celtics!
