Sanford Science and Math Education Center

Located 20 miles from Black Hills State University, scientists at the Sanford Underground Research Facility are exploring of some of the most compelling, transformational questions within particle physics, cosmology/astrophysics, and nuclear physics.
Education and outreach have been central to the Sanford Lab vision from the outset. The state of South Dakota and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford have invested in the creation of Sanford Lab in part for its educational promise. Black Hills State University works in close collaboration with Sanford Lab to help realize this promise.
Life Science Laboratory

BHSU’s Life Sciences Laboratory officially opened in 2011 providing space for classrooms, five teaching labs, three research labs, two conference rooms and faculty offices to meet the needs of students pursuing science degrees at BHSU. The building also houses the Center for the Conservation of Biological Resources (CCBR), a nationally recognized DNA lab. BHSU’s proximity to Sanford Lab creates opportunities for collaborative projects in the sciences.

Black Hills State University is proud to be fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. This means you will learn from excellent instructors in fine facilities who will support your learning through coursework, private instruction, and ensembles – they will go above and beyond to ensure your success. We have nearly one hundred percent placement for our music education majors.
The Music Department is housed in Clare and Josef Meier Hall. Music facilities include a beautiful recital hall, private faculty and student studios, fully-equipped practice rooms with pianos, an electronic keyboard lab, large rehearsal rooms, and music classrooms.
Photography Studio

BHSU's Photography program offers classes that span all aspects of the profession, from Basic Photography to Advanced Studio and Commercial Photography. Students learn both the artistry and the commercial aspects of this career.
Photography graduates will find opportunities in photojournalism, commercial photography, and fine art photography, with some going to graduate school for a Masters in Fine Arts.

The Donald E. Young Center at BHSU offers more than exceptional fitness facilities. Along with the largest collection of exercise equipment in the region, a field house with a walking track, and an Aquatic Center with lap lanes, the Young Center provides personal exercise prescriptions with a certified trainer and classes taught by wellness students.
Built in 1990, the Young Center continues to be the hub of the Black Hills State University Campus. The only building of its kind in the immediate region, it is designed to serve the needs of the university and the greater Black Hills community.

Thomas Hall, or "T-Hall" as it is commonly referred to, is one of the larger co-ed residence halls with capacity for 152 residents. Thomas Hall is a great place to make any student feel comfortable in the college setting because of the large recreation lounge, study lounge, and TV/movie lounge. Students who live in Thomas have a great experience with all that is offered by their fun and dynamic staff. Thomas Hall will be a staple of your college experience! Room sizes for Thomas Hall are 14' x 12'.

The Yellow Jacket Apartments are the perfect option for students over the age of 19 who need a little more privacy but still want to stay connected to the exciting environment of campus living. Living in the suites does work to fulfill the two year live-on requirement. There is a focus on sustainability at the campus suites our programs promote residents to make eco-friendly choices.
