History and Mission

As one of the third oldest Catholic colleges in New England, Saint Anselm has been providing an innovative education for more than 130 years. In 1889, a group of Benedictine monks moved from Newark, New Jersey, to Manchester, New Hampshire with the goal of establishing an institution for Catholic higher education. Iconic Alumni Hall was the first building on campus. At one point the building included a gymnasium, theater, bowling alley, and dining hall – today, it is home to administrative offices, classrooms, student housing, and more. It overlooks the college quad where students gather for frisbee, outdoor classes, or just relaxing in the sunshine.

With over 100 majors and minors, several pre-professional programs and master's degree programs, here you'll get a transformative education that is designed to grow the whole person. It all begins with Conversation, our flagship Humanities course that explores some of the greatest texts ever written and forms connections between science and philosophy, the arts and theology, and students and professors.

Here, you'll enjoy healthy, homemade food that is freshly prepared by our chefs and served in a fun atmosphere.With unique menus and dining experiences, you'll have options that fit your individual needs and delight your tastebuds. The culinary center at Davison Dining Hall serves traditional favorites and authentic global cuisine. The Coffee Shop and Pub is a popular destination for locally-sourced ice cream, karaoke, and pub-trivia nights. Athletics

Welcome to the Home of the Hawks! We bring a spirit of competition to everything we do. Our 23 NCAA Division II athletic teams are members of the Northeast-10 Conference, New England Women's Hockey Alliance, and East Coast Conference, where they compete in postseason contests every year. For those who enjoy staying active and spending time with friends, you can join one of our club and intramural sports programs. At Saint Anselm there's always an opportunity to play on, or root for, the home team.

What’s it like to live at Saint Anselm? Here you can lead, sing, play, volunteer—do whatever it is that you love to do. With more than 80 clubs and organizations to join and year round programming that includes events like Family Weekend, ski and snowboard trips, and more, it's no wonder that more than 80% of students get involved on campus. If your passion is service, we have partnerships with over many nonprofit organizations in our community. If you're interested in exploring cultures and topics relevant to diversity and social justice, our Center for Intercultural Learning and Inclusion serves as a safe space where people of all backgrounds can gather, learn, and get involved.

Humanities

At Saint Anselm, we are committed to developing innovative ways to integrate humanistic thought and understanding into people's lives. The Gregory J. Grappone Humanities Institute is a great resource for students to help with that mission. Weekly and monthly programs bring community members together to discuss life's biggest questions. In addition, the College's interdisciplinary minor in the Humanities builds upon students' first-year Conversation seminar experiences by providing a curriculum that is taught by faculty from twelve different academic departments and examines the variety of ways that values, beliefs, history, and art shape our humanity.

Saint Anselm College is home to one of the nation’s most well-renowned nursing programs. We believe nursing is both an art and a science. That's why our curriculum incorporates the Benedictine values of stewardship, humility, and hospitality with hands-on experience in high-tech simulation labs and hospital clinical rotations that begin in their sophomore year. Our capabilities in healthcare continue to grow with the establishment of our School of Nursing and Health Sciences and the addition of majors in Health Sciences and Public Health, and a new, state-of-the-art Nursing and Health Sciences building - because we know that investing in nursing is investing in our future.

The Goulet Science Center is home to our Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology Departments. In addition to cutting edge laboratories, this building features a greenhouse, lecture hall, and reading room. An essential part of our science curriculum is research. By studying here, you'll have the opportunity to work closely with your professors, be published, and even present research at local, national, and international conferences. Our students yearly complete more than 9,000 hours of research on topics like cancer cell growth and treatment, environmentally ethical drug delivery systems, and the effect of daily-stressors on mental well-being.

Politics

Saint Anselm College is home to the New Hampshire Institute of Politics, a nonpartisan forum for discussion and debate, whose mission is to educate, engage, and empower citizens to participate in the civic and political life of their communities. U.S. representatives, senators, presidential candidates, and journalists all visit this space, offering truly unrivaled experiential learning opportunities to students interested in politics. You'll even have the opportunity to assist with political events hosted on campus by joining the Kevin B. Harrington Student Ambassador program. It's often said that "we learn about politics by studying the world and reflecting on what we have observed" – and at Saint Anselm, you'll get a front row seat.

Spiritual Life

Considered the heart of campus, the Abbey Church is a peaceful place for prayer and reflection. One of our core values, rooted in our Catholic, Benedictine tradition, is hospitality, which means we welcome people of all faith backgrounds to our community. The Campus Ministry Office, located in the student center, offers a variety of additional programs and opportunities for students to explore spirituality and foster dialogue year-round. Our campus is also home to over 30 Benedictine monks, who call Saint Anselm home. They work in our offices, teach in our classrooms, and cheer on the Hawks at our sporting events!

Opportunities abound to enjoy and be involved with the arts on campus! The Dana Center for the Performing Arts is home to the nationally ranked humanities program, Conversation, the headquarters for the student theater group, the Anselmian Abbey Players, as well as the Koonz Theatre - a hub for musical and theatrical performance spaces from students, faculty, staff, and national and international groups. Each year, our stages are home to a full schedule of artistic events. Throughout the year, you can also enjoy exhibits of student, faculty, or visiting artists' work or peruse the College's permanent collection by visiting the Alva de Mars Megan Chapel Arts Center in Alumni Hall.

To help you get there, our Career Development Center offers resumé, cover letter and interview assistance and helps students and alumni find internship and job opportunities that lead to fulfilling careers.
