Welcome to CTE, the Career and Technical Education Division of Pittsburgh Public Schools. Under the leadership of Executive Director Angela Mike, there are CTE programs located in all the comprehensive high schools in the District. CTE students are enrolled in programs that provide academic rigor and opportunities to learn technical skills that are in demand in today's job market.In the East Region of our School District, there are three schools with CTE programs: Pittsburgh Allderdice, Pittsburgh Milliones, and Pittsburgh Westinghouse. Allderdice has Engineering Technology and RHVAC.Milliones hasEarly Childhood Education and Entertainment Technology.Westinghouse has Business Administration, Sports and Entertainment; Carpentry, Cosmetology; Culinary Arts; and, Health Careers Technology. Students in the Engineering Technology program gain exposure to different types of engineering - including civil, mechanical, electrical and green. In this STEM program, they learn about problem solving, teamwork, fundamental electronics systems, engineering graphics, green energy, the properties of natural, composite and synthetic material, and total quality control. They can also earn an Occupational Safety and Health Administration certification. Our students are designing solutions for real life using the engineering design process. For one of these projects, they are using a 3D printer to design and produce customized utensils for differently-abled students in our school district. RHVAC is our Refrigeration, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning program. Here students acquire the technical knowledge and skills to install, repair and maintain commercial and domestic heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. They learn about filtering and controlling humidity; how to read blueprints; how to diagnose equipment malfunctions; and how to overhaul, repair and adjust units and parts. In Pennsylvania, RHVAC technicians can earn $14.00 per hour at the entry level and over $30 per hour at the advanced level. RHVAC students can earn credits towards an associate's degree in this field plus the EPA 608 certification. That's cool and hot at the same time.

Success is in your prognosis through the Health Careers Technology program. Learn about medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, clinical laboratory procedures, basic clinical skills, OSHA regulations and infection control. Instruction includes the use of EKG machines, Doppler machines, simulation mannequins, hospital beds, wheelchairs, autoclaves, pulse oximeters, laptop medical carts and more. Our students participate in out-of-classroom learning experiences that include observation of surgical procedures and job shadowing. Students learn CPR techniques, how to use an Automatic Electronic Defibrillator, and can earn a Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association. Dual enrollment college credits are also available. In the Health Careers Technology program, health is wealth.

Builders of the future are enrolled in our Carpentry program. Our students obtain the technical knowledge and skills to lay out, fabricate, erect, install and repair structures and fixtures using hand and power tools. This program includes instruction in common systems of framing, construction materials, estimating, blueprint reading and finish-carpentry techniques. Students can earn an OSHA certification specific to the construction industry and can qualify for membership in the Carpenters' Union while in high school. Whether you'll eventually build bridges, roads, skyscrapers or homes, as a carpentry student, you'll build a pathway to career success. Check out our carpentry program. Enter the world of beauty through the Cosmetology program. Cosmetology students obtain the technical knowledge and skills to perform hair cutting, hair styling, permanent waving, braiding and hair coloring. They also learn how to perform facials, manicures and pedicures. Bacteriology, anatomy, hygiene, sanitation, salon management and customer relations are emphasized. Students can earn the 1250 hours necessary to take the state Board examination at no cost to them. You could become a licensed cosmetologist before graduation, allowing you to earn money and experience that could take you to college, to salon ownership, to film locations, or around the world. Life is delicious in Culinary Arts. Students master the use of food preparation equipment and tools, menu planning principles, effective communication, math calculations, safety and sanitation, workflow between dining room and kitchen operations, recipe conversions and more. Students apply their skills through the operation of their own on-site café, and by preparing meals and refreshments for special occasions involving industry professionals, members of the School Board of Directors, and visiting dignitaries. Culinary Arts students can earn a ServSafe - Food Manager certification. They can also earn dual enrollment college credits while in high school. You can be a top student on your way to becoming a top chef.

BASE is the Business Administration, Sports & Entertainment program. In BASE, students learn about business administration—with a sports and entertainment focus. Topics include media management, sales, event planning, law and ethics. CTE has a partnership with Point Park University's Sports, Arts and Entertainment Management Program, to provide valuable learning opportunities for BASE students. Through BASE, students can earn Microsoft Office certifications in Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word. They also participate in industry-linked field trips, mentoring, and job shadowing. BASE students have met business leaders in major Pittsburgh sports teams and performing arts organizations. In the BASE program, you can learn all about the business behind the show.

That childhood dream of having a job as an emergency medical technician, firefighter, or police officer is closer than you think thanks to the Emergency Response Technology Program at Pittsburgh Westinghouse also known as E.R.T. This program prepares students to perform entry level duties in all these fields. Working with state-of-the-art equipment, students learn how to: Operate a fire engine pumper, perform a rope and ladder rescue, manage trauma injuries, process crime scenes and more! The City of Pittsburgh has partnered with the E.R.T. program to help create a more diverse public safety workforce. Learn how to serve and protect your community. How can you change the world? One child at a time. Through CTE's Early Childhood Education program, you will prepare for a career as pre-school teacher or child care giver. Our students will take what they learn in the classroom into their clinical experiences in licensed child care centers, where they will work under the direct supervision of seasoned professionals. Students will not only be able to earn Child Development Associate certifications for Infant Toddler and for Pre-School, but can also earn 9 college credits towards an Early Childhood Education degree at Carlow University. The Entertainment Technology program, located at Pittsburgh *Milliones, can help you gain the skills for an exciting career path. You'll learn to provide services in a variety of areas including video, audio, and television production; animation; photography; and, online communication. Our students earn industry certifications, receive hands-on training using state-of-the-art equipment, and work with industry professionals from Steeltown Entertainment, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the University of Pittsburgh and more.
