The Lom Pangar regulating dam is located on the River Lom in Cameroon’s Eastern Region. The hydroelectric power plant at the foot of the dam can generate 30 megawatts of low-cost electricity for this rural area, while the reservoir collects and stores water during wet months to help regulate the water flow to the Sanaga River during dry periods.

Cameroon’s hydropower potential is the third largest in Sub-Saharan Africa, with the Sanga River basin providing nearly half of the untapped potential. The Lom Pangar dam will help increase all-season hydropower capacity on the Sanaga River, increasing the already installed capacity by 120 megawatts and the potential for additional hydropower plants by 40 percent.

Although Cameroon possesses immense hydropower potential, challenges remain. In rural areas, like the village of Lom Pangar near the dam, power outages are frequent, electricity costs are high, and grid-connected households are few—less than 14 percent in rural areas. With the completion of the Lom Pangar project, nearby communities are looking forward to fewer outages and lower electricity costs.

The Lom Pangar project meets the immediate needs of the people of Cameroon and the national economy. Construction of the hydropower dam will help boost Cameroon’s electricity generation capacity, stimulating economic development to the benefit of households and businesses. The dam’s construction has had other effects. In rural areas near the dam, markets have sprung up, bringing with them new job opportunities and places to sell local wares and goods.
