LONDO, in CAR’s local language, means “Stand-up”. Irrespective of religion, ethnicity, gender, etc., the people of CAR come together and join hands to rebuild their country.

So far, the LONDO project has maintained over 1,500 km/900 mi of roads, which connect communities to essential services. These labor-intensive public works are executed manually in all 71 districts of CAR.

Boosting the local economy

Five former LONDO beneficiaries pulled their savings together and started their own enterprise. Together with the 15 workers they hired in town, they build and sell bricks to local businesses.

Putting the local authorities in the driver seat

After works are completed, the LONDO project hands the tools over to municipalities. LONDO is further piloting a performance-based community maintenance system in some districts, where it provides technical assistance to local authorities. Beneficiary of this pilot, Mbaiki provides feedback on its experience.

Activating the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus

LONDO’s partnerships with peace, humanitarian and development actors have been essential to the success of the Project. LONDO ‘s close collaboration with MINUSCA’s Civil Affairs Department has been extremely effective for information-sharing; coordination and synergies around public works; support to the redeployment of the State and public services; and, security and logistics.

Remote supervision

LONDO intervenes in some of CAR’s most remote and very difficult-to-access areas. When on-site supervision is not possible, 360 geocodes pictures can be a useful and reliable way to be the eyes of the Bank and transport teams into the field, thereby allowing them to “see” the status and impact of projects.
