Starbucks

Our on-campus Starbucks, in the Dickson-Palmer Building overlooking the Stegall pond, is one of the most popular meeting spots at Wingate. Here, you'll regularly see students chatting with professors over lattes and frappuccinos, study groups hammering out concepts they've learned in class, or students simply unwinding or grabbing a pick-me-up. One of the larger Starbucks stores around, it's a hive of activity at all hours of the day. Also in the recently renovated Dickson-Palmer Building is the Crowder Welcome Center.

It's a recipe for success that has stood the test of time here. Just ask our president, Dr. Rhett Brown, whose office is up on the third floor. While a student at Wingate, Dr. Brown played football, edited the student newspaper and studied abroad in Russia. His time as a Wingate student sparked a lifelong love of learning and serving.

McGee Center

Welcome to the McGee Center, where Bulldogs unleash an active lifestyle. Opened in 2017, the McGee Center is our state-of-the-art health-and-wellness facility. The 60-thousand-square-foot space is free to use for all students and faculty and staff members. Just swipe your University-issued ID card and you're all set to play pickup basketball, hit the weights, or take a fitness class from one of our certified instructors. The McGee Center is home to many of our intramural sports. With more than a dozen intramural sports to choose from, Bulldogs stay active year-round. With an elevated track, racquetball, basketball and MAC courts, weights and cardio equipment, the McGee Center is a hive of activity all day. It's a welcoming place to meet friends and stay healthy, and you might even rub shoulders with your professors and with staff members. The McGee Center is truly a community meeting place.

JM Smith Residence Hall

Welcome to JM Smith, a coed freshman residence hall. Wingate is a primarily residential University, with about three-quarters of undergraduates living on campus. Although you'll probably be out and about much of your time at Wingate, dorm life is a big part of the college experience. You'll feel welcomed and make lifelong friends in the halls, suites and apartments on campus. All freshman residence halls have laundry facilities on-site, and the newest ones, including JM Smith, offer community kitchens. The University will work with you to find a compatible roommate so your Wingate experience starts off right. As you progress through your four years, you might opt for a suite- or apartment-style living arrangement. Regardless of which residence hall you live in, most students find that living on campus greatly enhances their college experience.

Batte Center

Welcome to the George A. Batte Jr. Fine Arts Center, where great music is made. The Batte Center is home to Wingate's music department and much more. Its 46,000 square feet includes a theater that seats 550, a recital hall, a choral hall, backstage dressing rooms, multiple classrooms, student lounges and other facilities. It's where the Music Department puts on operas and concerts, and where you'll attend many cultural events. Over the years, Wingate has brought the world to campus. We've hosted presidents and vice presidents; world-renowned musicians, speakers and artists; even chanting Tibetan monks.

Hinson Art Gallery

Everyone could use an art break from time to time, and the Hinson Art Museum is just the place. This light and quiet space is the perfect spot to find some calm amid your busy life, while enjoying pieces from Rembrandt, Picasso, Chihuly and several North Carolina artists. And you can't miss the impressive fresco from famed Tar Heel Ben Long. Hinson is also a great place to experience one of our cultural events, called Lyceums, and it is often used as a reception area for many of our campus guests.

Academic Quad

Soon after you arrive on campus for your first semester, you'll pass through The Gate and enter the Academic Quadrangle, the heart of Wingate University. Burris, the oldest and most revered building on campus, serves as the academic anchor. Throughout campus, you'll find small class sizes and learn from professors who are mentors more than lecturers. They'll work hard to find you opportunities to study outside the classroom, out in the real world. Wingate professors are committed to giving you the tools to help you succeed long after you've graduated. Ninety-three percent of Wingate seniors say that they learned to think more critically during their time at Wingate. You'll pass through the Gate countless times during your years on campus, and you'll exit through it after graduation on the Quad, armed with prospects and purpose.

EKS Library

Every year when we send out the Bulldog Poll, students tell us the Ethel K. Smith Library is one of their favorite places on campus. Here you'll find 110,000 volumes in the main stacks and have access to 16,000 journal and newspaper titles to use in your research. There are AV rooms, study carrels and computer labs, and an Einstein Brothers Bagels to keep you nourished as you study.

Levine College of Health Sciences

Since opening a pharmacy school less than two decades ago, Wingate has become the number one healthcare educator in western North Carolina. The Levine College of Health Sciences is home to the pharmacy, physician assistant studies and nursing programs. If you're interested in the health and welfare of others, perhaps a career in health care is for you. One of our most popular undergraduate majors is biology, and we offer pre-med and many other preprofessional health-care tracks. In case medical school is on your radar, Wingate has a partnership with the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine that could provide you with a smooth pathway. Classroom learning is enhanced with real-world practice experiences in hospitals, medical clinics, community organizations and interactive labs.

If you're looking for a career in business or have a knack for communications, you'll probably be spending a lot of time in the Neu Building. Our innovative classroom spaces include the finance lab, where students use cutting-edge technology to find solutions to real-world problems. If communications and media are more your thing, Neu is where you'll learn to film and edit, construct a compelling narrative and make speeches that change hearts and minds. At Neu, you'll work closely with faculty members to get valuable experience that translates seamlessly to the real world after graduation. And all of our professors work hard to find students internships, such as in the VITA program, in which Wingate accounting students do tax preparation for low-income families.

Community Garden

The Collaborative for the Common Good is one service-oriented way Wingate is linked to the wider community. Living the University's motto of "Faith, Knowledge, Service," the CCG provides students with hands-on learning opportunities that benefit the citizens of Union County, especially those with the greatest need. Through the CCG, students calculate the impact of the University's sustainability efforts, mentor at-risk youth, serve as companions for the elderly, and provide valuable information at health fairs. The CCG helps classroom instruction come to life in the community. It is the embodiment of the University's mission to be a Lab of Difference-Making.

International House

Welcome to International House, a haven for students from around the world or those wanting to see the world. The Office of International Programs provides assistance to the roughly 130 international students who call Wingate home each year. If you're coming to Wingate from outside the U.S., International Programs will help you adjust to life in North Carolina. Wingate is renowned for its study-abroad offerings. With our W'International program, qualifying juniors have the opportunity to spend 10 days learning the customs and cultures of a variety of countries for as little as fifteen hundred dollars. In recent years, students have studied in South Korea, Brazil, Cuba, Cambodia, Egypt and many other countries. Wingate was recently ranked No. 11 in the nation for study abroad among doctorate-granting institutions. Closer to home, our W'Engage program, which provides service-oriented travel opportunities to sophomores, is often a first step for students looking to broaden their horizons.

South Village

One of the best parts of staying on campus is living among your peers. And in South Village, you'll be in the middle of the action. South Village is a cluster of six apartment-style residence halls for upperclassmen. It's just a few steps from the Academic Quad, where many of your classes will be taught. Also nearby is the South Village Clubhouse, where you can lounge beside the outdoor pool on a sunny day, join in a game of beach volleyball or grab a bite to eat at the Klondike, one of the most popular dining facilities on campus. The Klondike features Wild Blue sushi, Freshens salads, smoothies and sandwiches, and the ever popular Chick-fil-A. Wherever you live on campus, you can find something fun to do nearby, and you'll always have an easy walk to dining facilities and your classes.

Health Center

The Health Center, in the Holbrook Building, helps you take care of your mind and body. Staffed by a team of two nurse practitioners, an RN, a certified medical assistant, a certified nursing assistant and a part-time physician, the Health Center provides students with a convenient place to receive a host of medical treatments. Here, you can get a physical exam, immunizations, allergy shots, treatments for minor injuries and illnesses, and much more. Also in Holbrook you'll find our counseling services. You can receive confidential, short-term mental-health treatment free of charge from a licensed mental-health therapist or supervised graduate-assistant intern.

W. T. Harris Food Hall

Wingate Bulldogs certainly don't go hungry. The Food Hall at W.T. Harris is Wingate's dining hub. Here, you can find a grill, pizza and pastas, a salad bar, homestyle offerings and other specialties in an all-you-care-to-eat dining experience. The Klondike, just across Elm Promenade from the Academic Quad, offers Wild Blue sushi, a variety of healthy offerings from Freshens, and the ever popular Chick-fil-A. You'll find grab-and-go kiosks around campus, offering salads, sandwiches and quick bites. If you are a residential student, you'll have an all-access meal plan you can use at the Klondike and the dining hall. Other meal plans are available for commuter, graduate and part-time students, and all meal plans include Bulldog Bucks, which you can use at Starbucks, Einstein Brothers Bagels and Pizza Hut.

Athletics

Athletics are a central part of Wingate's vibrant campus life. Nearly a fourth of our undergrads are athletes, and all students can cheer them on free of charge as they chase NCAA Division II championships. Athletes in our 23 varsity sports come from around the world and from a variety of backgrounds, and they excel on and off the field. We've had the top overall athletics program in our conference for 13 consecutive years. And since 2000 we've had more Academic All-Americans than any school in North Carolina – even UNC and Duke. Athletics opens up a world of possibilities for students to gain experience in sports broadcasting, through our partnership with ESPN, and in sports marketing, administration and management.

Living Communities

At Wingate, we believe that you learn as much from your classmates as from your professors. That's why we strongly encourage students to live on campus. And no matter which residence hall you call home, you'll be just steps away from the action. Our residence halls are all adjacent to academic buildings, athletic fields or other amenities, meaning vibrant campus life is always just outside your door. In the southeast corner of campus, Wilson East and West and Helms Hall are in a prime location to catch soccer action at "Pride Park," watch a softball game, compete on the intramural field or take part in the annual Color Run and Holi Festival.

The Lake

Whether you're a biology student doing research, a recreation major learning to steer a canoe or a nature lover who likes to hike and picnic, you'll want to find your way to Wingate's nine-acre campus lake. Located just off East Wilson Street, which runs right through campus, the lake area features trails, sheltered tables for gatherings and plenty of space for large events. You can bring a hammock to string up or a fishing rod and spend time enjoying one of the most beautiful spots on Wingate's 400-acre campus.
