Welcome to Sydney Lewis Hall, home of W&L Law. For over 170 years, the School of Law has delivered rigorous and innovative legal instruction in a community of trust and respect. We count among our many distinguished alumni two U.S. Supreme Court Justices and seven presidents of the American Bar Association, the third most of any law school in the nation. The lawn next to Lewis Hall is the site of many of the school's extracurricular events, from an active intramural program to special events organized by the Student Bar Association. An activities fair in the fall helps new students learn about the more than 30 organizations at the law school.

The Washington and Lee University School of Law seeks to cultivate broad-minded, highly skilled, and honorable practitioners of law. We do so within a diverse and collaborative intellectual community exemplifying rigor, trust, and civility. Our focus on this mission, our small size, and the accessibility of our faculty create a community where students are known, trusted and challenged. At the law school you will be surrounded by fellow students who care about each other and collaborate in the classroom, within student organizations, and throughout the greater Lexington community.
Millhiser Moot Court Room

This is the Millhiser Moot Court Room, home to special events, guest speakers, symposia, and of course, to the student-run Moot Court competitions. At W&L, all 2Ls and 3L are able to participate in intra-school moot court competitions on negotiations, appellate advocacy and more. The winners of those competitions go on to represent the school regionally, and potentially nationally. Federal circuit courts, such as the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, hear real cases in the moot courtroom each year, and our students often get the chance to argue during those hearings in front of actual judges.

Small classes are the hallmark of W&L Law. All 1Ls take the same first-year courses, creating a shared intellectual experience and a true sense of collaboration that continues throughout the years at W&L. Those classes are Torts, Contracts, Civil Procedure, and Legal Research and Writing in the fall. In the spring, 1Ls take Property, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Transnational Law, and Legal Research and Writing. With a total student body of 400 and an average class size of 22, you will form close-knit relationships with faculty and your peers.
Mock Trial Courtroom

Students can practice the art of lawyering in our state of the art mock trial court room. W&L Law has long been a leader in experiential education, and we provide ample opportunity for students to take their first steps into actual practice and begin to develop the habits and mindset of successful lawyers. All of our students – 100% - acquire real practice experience through a clinic, externships and other practice-based offerings.
Office of Career Strategy

This is the Office of Career Strategy, or OCS. OCS counselors work with individual students and alumni as they further their legal careers. OCS organizes W&L's On Campus Interviews (or OCI) as well as our regional interview programs. Many W&L Law graduates go on to employment opportunities throughout the county, including in such major markets as Washington DC, New York City, Charlotte, Atlanta and Dallas. Our "whole school" approach and executive search model have helped W&L achieve some of the nation's highest legal employment rates for our graduates.
Library Study Area

W&L Law gives students numerous options for studying. All 1Ls receive an individual study space upon arrival at the law school. In addition, we offer rooms for small group study sessions and large tables to spread out and work collaboratively. One of the primary academic pursuits for many students is writing for a legal journal. There are three journals at W&L Law: The Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice; the German Law Journal, and the W&L Law Review. As journal staff-writers, students craft notes and edit articles, furthering essential writing and research skills while exploring subjects in depth.
Main Reading Room

The main reading room is a key academic hub at the law school, where students prepare for class and exams. W&L Law supports the student transition to law school through an active Academic Success series of resources and programming. In addition, the Burks Scholar Program assists the legal writing and research faculty. Small class sizes and individual attention are a feature of both the writing and the legal research sections. On top of that, all incoming students are assigned to Kirgis Fellows, 2L students who mentor 1Ls in small groups throughout the year.
Tax Clinic

Students working in our legal clinics, such as the tax clinic shown here, help to meet the need for legal assistance in the region and, at the same time, develop lawyering skills. The six clinic offerings at the law school are: Immigrant Rights, Civil Rights and Racial Justice, Black Lung Clinic, the Community Legal Practice Center, the Criminal Justice Clinic, and the Tax Clinic. If you choose an externship rather than a clinic, options include the Judicial Externship Program, the Criminal Externship Program, and the General Externship Program, which includes the option of externing in Washington, DC for the fall semester.
Brief Stop

Students can eat lunch or just hang out at the Brief Stop. Also, free coffee on Mondays! Located on the second floor of the law school, the Brief Stop is just one of the many dining options at the university. In addition to the main dining hall, called the Marketplace, our students can visit the nearby Fieldside and Fireside eateries. The Law School is also a short walk from the fitness center and the swimming center.
