Northeast Residential Quad

The Northeast Quad, in the Northeast Residential Area, features nine traditionally-styled buildings and is one of the 7 main residential areas on campus. The "quad" serves as a gathering space for lawn games, fall barbecues and study sessions. It is adjacent to the Northeast beach volleyball court where you will see students playing all times of the day. Northeast Residential Area houses the majority of the STEM, Nursing and Education students as these buildings are nearby. Some dorms within the Northeast Residential area also have Residential Academic Programs – plus, Lewis Hall is home to the Asian/Asian-American Residential Community.

Southwest Residential Area

Southwest is one of five residential areas on campus that are open to first-year students. It consists of five towers and 11 low-rise buildings, and houses about half our on-campus population. Southwest has a city-like feel, with students always socializing, working on their academics, or heading to one of the two dining halls in this area. Fun fact: Southwest is the second most densely populated area on the East Coast, right after Manhattan!

Worcester Dining Commons

We're here in the newly renovated Worcester Dining Commons, which opened in Fall 2020 and features a food hall style layout, a globally inspired menu, a teaching kitchen, and more. Worcester is one of four full-service dining commons on campus. We also have the Blue Wall food court in the Campus Center, two food trucks, and several retail dining spots around campus. From an early morning breakfast to a late-night snack, UMass Dining is delicious any time of day.

Campus Center

The Campus Center is home to multiple different dining options, the UMass store, and the UMass Hotel. In the main concourse, Blue Wall and Harvest offer over a dozen different dining options ranging from sustainable salads to authentic Asian specialities. The UMass campus store is your one-stop shop for all your Minutemen regalia. Above the concourse, you can find the UMass Hotel and various conference rooms for events. Fun fact: about 80% of our student population walks through the campus center every day!

Student Union

The Student Union, newly renovated as of February 2021, is home to our Student Government Association and many of our student clubs and businesses. The SGA oversees all of our more than 300 clubs, and allocates an annual budget of more than 3 million dollars. We have clubs for everything you can think of, including academics, community service, professional development, sports, and more. Some student favorites include the Ski & Board Club, the Theater Guild, Beekeeping Club, and the Ballroom Dancing Club. The new Student Union also includes spaces for our student newspaper and radio station, and a prayer room.

Library

The W.E.B. Du Bois library is the tallest red brick academic library in the world! It stands 28 stories high and is home to numerous resources for students including, but not limited to, our writing center, digital media lab, printing services, Office of Undergraduate Research and Studies, peer tutoring and delicious Procrastination Station cafe!

Rec Center

The Rec Center was built in 2009 and was modeled after the 2008 US Olympic Training Center. It is equipped with Olympic-quality equipment, including weights, ellipticals, rowing machines, stationary bikes, and so much more. The Rec Center also houses multiple basketball courts, an indoor track, and group fitness classrooms where students can take a wide variety of classes, like zumba, yoga, and cardio kickboxing!

Commonwealth Honors College

The Commonwealth Honors College (CHC) is housed in its own residential community on campus. It includes the Roots Cafe, two first-year dorm buildings, as well as four upperclassmen dorms with apartment and suite-style living. CHC also has an honors advising center for students to get advising for honors classes and the honors thesis. Honors classes are held in nine classrooms within the residential community.

The Integrative Learning Center (ILC) is home to the Communication and Journalism departments. The building also has many different style classrooms, including lecture halls, desks, and group tables to enhance discussions. The Integrated Sciences Building brings together life and chemical sciences with modern classrooms and laboratories for basic and advanced courses, and flexible research laboratories for life sciences research teams. The high-performance design incorporates many environmentally friendly and energy-saving green-building techniques. The John Olver Design Building is a cutting-edge facility that uses innovative building techniques and sustainable practices. In 2017, it was named building of the year by World- Architects, and one of the best new buildings by the Wall Street Journal, among other awards. The Design Building brings together the Architecture, Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning, and Building & Construction Technology programs in one facility to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, research and learning. Old Chapel

Old Chapel is one of the oldest buildings here at UMass. Originally used for religious services in 1885, the Old Chapel was renovated in 2017 and now holds events for the campus and community. The Randolph W. Bromery Center for the Arts is home to almost all of our performances, exhibitions, and educational programs in the theater department. Constructed in 1975, this large performance hall creates a unique atmosphere, whether you're in class, on stage or watching from the audience.

We are a D1 school and all students can go see and support our games for free with their student ID card. We also have club sports, which are similar to varsity sports in high school. You practice about 3-5 times a week and travel with the team to different competitions in the US. We also have tons of intramural sports, which are much less commitment and so much fun! You can do "top gun" -- which you need some experience for -- or "just for fun," where you just need a positive attitude!

Student Farm

UMass is one of the few universities that offers a student farm that is mostly run by our undergraduate/graduate students! This 20 acre farm serves as an asset to not only student experiences, but also a great source to provide fresh produce to our dining commons. Offering fall, spring, and summer courses, this farm is a producer of both food and educated individuals!

Downtown Amherst

Amherst was listed as a top 10 college town in the United States and it's clear to see why. Downtown Amherst has an amazing shopping experience with all of the locally run businesses and unique shops. There is a variety of eateries ranging from bakeries, to ice cream, to fine dining. There are also lots of common areas, parks, and museums where events can be held. Students can easily walk or take the bus to downtown and they frequently do so to take advantage of all the opportunities.
