Shelton State Community College is a member of the Alabama Community College Conference and competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association at the Division I level. Our varsity teams include baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, and fast-pitch softball. Our Athletics Department has spent the past decade establishing a winning tradition and bringing home championship trophies. Our teams have won 29 NJCAA Region XXII Division I titles in men's and women's basketball and baseball, 13 National Championships in competitive cheerleading, and 7 recognitions as an Academic Team of the Year for softball. Shelton State also offers two Club Sports, Bass Fishing and eSports.

Shelton State Community College's Athletic Programs offer several opportunities for athletes to train with our expert coaches and staff. Training camps include baseball, cheer, women's basketball, and men's basketball. As the Community College of the Fine Arts, Shelton State inspires and prepares the artists of tomorrow.  With scholarships available in all disciplines, students find their dreams well within their grasp. The visual art department features studio art courses like drawing, painting, two- and three-dimensional composition, in addition to digital art courses like graphic design and digital photography. We have a large art studio and a brand-new state of the art digital lab. We also feature multiple art shows each year in our very own art gallery, the Cadence Bank Art Gallery.

The music department provides programming in areas such as vocal and instrumental ensembles, private instruction, class piano, and theory. There are large rehearsal rooms, faculty studios, an electronic keyboard classroom, and student practice rooms. The music department produces numerous concerts each semester for the Shelton State and Tuscaloosa communities, including a weekly concert series called Terrific Tuesday. The music department also regularly travels within the southeast region and around the United States for performances and educational opportunities, including a biannual trip to New York City for the Shelton Singers to perform at Carnegie Hall.

The Theatre Department is exceptional because of its relationship with Theatre Tuscaloosa, one of the largest theatres in the state. The Theatre Department, in cooperation with Theatre Tuscaloosa, provides opportunities in student shows, theatre classes in acting and stage movement, stage craft and master classes with professional artists, and performance and technical opportunities with Theatre Tuscaloosa. We have a full-scale proscenium theatre, the Bean-Brown Theatre, rehearsal spaces, dance studios, scenic shops, and costume shops.

The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration program offers students the training and skills needed to install, service, and repair refrigeration and air conditioning systems. The Engineering Graphics and Design Technology program prepares students for careers as civil or mechanical engineering technicians that link the skilled worker with the engineer or architect. The Modern Manufacturing prepares individuals to apply basic manufacturing principles and technical skills to the identification and resolution of production problems in the manufacturing of products.

Martin Campus - Computerized Numerical Control, Electrical Technology, Industrial Electronics, Machi

Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) helps students learn to operate CNC machines by programing the machines to function automatically via numerical instructions. The Electrical Technology program teaches theories and principles of the operation of electrical appliances, equipment, and machines; the installation and auxiliary services of motors, transformers, industrial controls, and programmable logic controllers; and preparation for the state electrician examination. The Industrial Electronics program prepares students for careers as electronic technicians. The Machine Tool Technology program prepares students for positions, such as machinist apprentice, auxiliary services machinist, machine tool operator, and general machinist.

Salon and spa management prepares students for careers in the professional care of hair, skin, and nails. In addition to the required year of training, students must complete all requirements and pass the Alabama Board of Cosmetology Examination. The Business Office Management and Technology program offers students the training and skills needed for operation of various specialist software programs, coding, office equipment, manual and computerized accounting, organizing, and legal research.

Our Associate Degree in Nursing program provides you with everything you will need to prepare for your registered nurse licensure exam. We follow a concept-based curriculum that includes both nursing and general education courses. Course content includes the role of the registered nurse, healthcare concepts, and technical observations and skills. Our supervised clinical labs also provide many opportunities to focus on the various aspects of patient care.

Martin Campus - Truck Driving, Diesel Mechanics and Welding

With state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, you'll find hands-on learning opportunities that place you on the leading edge in your chosen profession. Truck Driving is an eight-week program offered through Community Education. The Diesel Mechanics program trains students to remove, repair, install, and maintain diesel engines powering heavy trucks, buses, boats, diesel-powered equipment, and construction equipment, such as bulldozers, cranes, and diesel farm tractors. The Welding Technology program is designed to establish welding skills necessary for entry-level job placement and to enhance the skills of experienced welders in various arc welding processes used by industry.

The campus now called Shelton State Community College C. A. Fredd Campus was initially an institution created by the state legislature in 1963 as Tuscaloosa State Trade School. In 1976, the college name was changed to C. A. Fredd State Technical College to honor the first president of the institution. C. A. Fredd State Technical College was recognized as one of the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The C. A. Fredd Campus of Shelton State Community College maintains that identity and continues the specific HBCU mission of promoting educational access and opportunity for all students in a culturally diverse community.

The Computer Science Technology program allows students to become expert problem solvers with the practical and theoretical systems that underlie computer systems. Students have the opportunity to obtain various industry-recognized certifications within the program, including A+, Computer Programming, Cisco Networking, Comp TIA, and more. Computer Science Technology students graduate prepared for numerous entry-level positions in computer programming, application and software development, computer systems analysis, LAN setup and maintenance, and database administration.

Health Information Technology (HIT) professionals acquire, organize, and manage health information data. They ensure quality, accuracy, accessibility, and security in both paper and electronic systems. The Respiratory Therapy program is a balanced curriculum, including both respiratory and general education courses. Course content includes the role of the respiratory therapist, healthcare concepts, and technical observations and skills. The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is qualified academically in applied science education to provide clinical laboratory skills and knowledge in rapidly changing and dynamic healthcare delivery systems. Medical laboratory technicians perform, evaluate, correlate, and assure accuracy and validity of laboratory information; direct and supervise clinical laboratory resources and operations; and collaborate in diagnosing and treating patients.

The Automotive Mechanics program provides instruction in the skills and technical knowledge needed to meet the entry-level requirements of employment in the automotive field. Students develop an understanding of logical, step-by-step diagnostic procedures and repairs according to manufacturers' recommendations. The automotive shop offers hands-on experience in disassembling, inspecting, adjusting, and testing various types of engines. Students also learn advanced technology found in emission controls, sensing devices, electronic fuel injection, and computer-controlled timing. Our Corporate Partnerships offer cooperative training opportunities with companies such as Mercedes, Nucor, Hunt Refining Company, and BF Goodrich.

The Culinary Arts program provides students with the strong theoretical knowledge base, critical competencies, practical skills, and professional demeanor and behavior necessary to perform successfully and creatively in the culinary arts and food service industry. Topics include food selection and preparation, menu planning, meal management, and restaurant and food service operation.

Knowing that an educated, employed workforce improves the social and economic conditions of any community, the vision of the Shelton State Community College Adult Education Program is to assist adults in learning and developing skills for employment and self-sufficiency. Join a free adult education class to prepare for the GED, qualify for Ready to Work, earn a Workplace Success credential to obtain a CDL permit, increase English language proficiency, and/or complete a non-traditional high school diploma.
