School of Social Work

The School of Social Work, also located on the East Campus, houses one of the most competitive social work programs in the country and is the sole program offering the M.S.W. degree in Rhode Island. Graduates have gone forward to work as practitioners, clinicians, advocates and managers in community practice and social work agencies.

School of Business

The School of Business located in Alger Hall, offers undergraduate degrees in accounting, computer information systems, economics, finance, marketing and management with concentrations in human resources, international, operations and general management. It also offers a master's degree program in professional accountancy, operations management and health care administration. In Alger Halls' Bloomberg Finance lab, consisting of 12 terminals, students receive certification on Bloomberg software gaining hands-on experience in financial analysis and trade. Students use real-time data from global finance markets as part of the "Managerial Finance and Control" class within the management curriculum.

Sciences and Laboratories

Here in Clarke Science and Fogarty Life Science, students in biology, chemistry, physics and pre-medical programs use our recently renovated state-of-the-art biochemistry lab to conduct research and develop laboratory skills. Faculty members work with students one-on-one in areas of research including experimental and theoretical physics, biology, oceanography, environmental chemistry, organic reaction mechanisms, green chemistry and spectroscopy. Attached to Clarke is the RIC greenhouse, where students and faculty conduct research in ecology and other fields.

School of Nursing

The School of Nursing wing, in the Fogarty Life Science building, was part of a recent $6-million renovation and expansion of its facilities. Nursing students from RIC consistently score above the state and national averages on the National Council Licensure Examination. RIC's R.N. to B.S.N. program was recently ranked #1 in New England. The Nursing Resource Laboratory – known as the SIM Lab – teaches students professional nursing skills in a simulated setting and is equipped with multimedia and audiovisual technology including videos, task trainers and computers. RIC and Yale University have the only two SIM labs in the region that are nationally accredited for teaching and learning.

Campus Quad

The Campus Quad is the center for campus activities and community. Several times throughout the year, a number of student clubs and organizations host free events on the quad. Students can study on the quad, or meet friends at campus-wide events that are held during free period, a weekly time-slot during which no classes are held. The Adams Library, found in the center of the Quad, has a floor for silent study and rooms for group study, as well as a floor dedicated to academic and student support services, included OASIS, the Office of Academic and Information Services, Learning for Life and the Writing and Math Learning Centers.

Residence Halls

Nearly 1,200 resident students call RIC their home. Browne, Weber and Thorp Halls have suites of 8 to 12 single rooms clustered around a common study-living area. Sweet and Willard feature double-occupancy rooms, and Sweet has provisions for students with disabilities. Penfield Hall features apartment-style housing. Each room is equipped with wireless cable, social lounges, laundry areas, kitchen facilities and social and educational programs. Freshmen are allowed to have cars on campus. The Office of Residential Life and Housing is conveniently located in Penfield Hall. By building a supportive community that celebrates creativity and diversity, with a goal of providing lasting connections that instill a commitment to leadership and citizenry.

Alex & Ani Hall

A recent large-scale $17-million dollar renovation and expansion of Alex & Ani Hall produced a beautiful state-of-the-art facility for students in the fine arts program. The new space includes a digital media laboratory with Mac computers and a 3D printer, a photography suite with a seminar room, lab and photo-shooting studio, a pottery studio with indoor and outdoor kilns and multiple painting, sculpting, printmaking, jewelry and metalsmithing studios. Several gallery spaces display the work of students majoring in studio art with various chosen concentrations.

Feinstein School of Education

The Feinstein School of Education and Human Development, housed in Horace Mann Hall, is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. The School of Education seeks to embrace innovation and cherish a tradition of making teaching and learning personal, meaningful, and exciting. Areas of teaching include Art, Music, Early Childhood, Health, Physical, Secondary, Special & Technology education. Majors in youth development and community health & wellness are also offered through the School of Education. Off campus, RIC's multi-faceted partnership with the Central Falls community, known as the Innovation Lab, is a model in urban education.

Student Union

The Student Union serves as the hub for student activities and student organizations. RIC has more than 80 clubs, sororities, fraternities and student-run organizations, including Resident Student Association, Environmental Club, Programming, Feminists United, Student Community Government and the Ballroom Dance Club. The Student Union is also the first stop for necessities. Students can grab a snack between classes and buy books and supplies at the book store. Our student-run FM radio station WXIN, the Anchor Newspaper and Anchor TV are housed adjacent to the Student Union in the Ducey Media Center.

Donovan Dining Center

The Donovan Dining Center offers a wide range of meal choices for both resident and commuter students to enjoy. Delicious hot entrée specials change daily, as well as varying fresh deli sandwiches, grilled items, soups and a full salad bar. Vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free options are readily available. Our 80-seat café and lounge in the Student Union is also a great place to meet with friends or study during class breaks. The café hosts open-mic nights where students can either enjoy or perform music, stand-up comedy or poetry.

Performing Arts

The Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts is an outstanding multi-use facility that supports the music, theatre and dance education programs. Performance facilities include the 422-seat Sapinsley Hall, the 943-seat Auditorium in Roberts Hall, the black-box Forman Theatre, the Fannie Helen Melcer Dance Studio and the Little Theatre. Performing arts students gain hands-on experience with participation in several major productions throughout the academic year. The Performing Arts Series hosts award-winning performing artists. Notable visual artists also regularly exhibit at the Bannister Gallery in Roberts Hall, the building in which the Office of the President is also located.

Athletics

Home for all Anchormen and women intercollegiate sports on campus, the Murray Center contains a 32,000-square-foot free-floating wooden floor and specialized training resources for our 21 NCAA Division III teams including baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, lacrosse, tennis, track & field, volleyball and wrestling. Multiple outdoor athletic fields include a full track, six hard-court surfaced tennis courts and baseball and softball fields. Club sports, open to all students, include an equestrian team, ice hockey and ultimate Frisbee; intramural programs for flag football, water volleyball, tennis, basketball and dodgeball are also open for anyone to join and require only a RIC I.D. for participation.

Recreational Center

All students are members of the Recreation Center and do not have to be on a sports team to enjoy the high-quality recreational programs and services that it offers. A $12-million renovation project was recently completed to ensure the overall wellness of students, faculty and staff. The advanced facility includes a two-story cardio and weight training area, an outdoor terrace, locker rooms, a sports medicine area, a multi-purpose dance studio, an indoor swimming pool, multiple playing courts and a large field house with a 1/10 mile five-lane track. A WiFi lounge with wide screen TV's gives students a place to relax or meet with friends.

Gaige Hall

Part of a $44-million dollar, multi-phased renovation, completed in the summer of 2017, Gaige Hall is one of RIC's largest academic buildings. Home to the Dean of Arts and Sciences, the college's largest school, offering over 50 majors and concentrations, such as English and Creative Writing, Film Studies, Gender and Woman's Studies, Food Safety, and Environmental Chemistry. The Departments of Anthropology, Modern Languages, Philosophy, Political Science and Sociology; as well as the Audiovisual Department and Help Center can all be found in Gaige Hall. The newly renovated building features 15 classrooms, a computer lab, a multi-purpose room, an auditorium and student lounge space.

Career Development Services

Through year-round workshops, job fairs and counseling, the Career Development Center helps students translate a RIC education into job opportunities and graduate study. Counselors work with degree candidates to refine their job search skills in networking, interviewing and résumé preparation. Those students planning to attend graduate school get professional advice on the application process. Any student may create a free account with Career Insider – our online career library – that allows students to research career fields, download industry guides, search for internships, and engage in communication with those who share similar interests.
