Located in the George M. Low Center for Industrial Innovation, the Manufacturing Innovation Learning Lab, or the MILL for short, is a forward-looking manufacturing learning environment. Leveraging the instructor expertise and industry-grade equipment, sophomores and seniors taking Introduction to Engineering Design, Manufacturing Processes and Systems I and II, and senior capstone design courses can practice and master manufacturing processes. In these classes, students undergo the same design, process engineering, technical documentation, and rapid prototyping used in industrial research and development teams. The MILL and MPS Class is sponsored by several industrial partners including Boeing, GE Global Research, Sikorsky, and Snap-on. Some of the most valuable connections on campus are made through the Severino Center for Technological Entrepreneurship. The center guides, mentors, and coaches student-based startup businesses, connecting those who are starting businesses to resources and networks within and beyond the Rensselaer community. Each year, the Severino Center fosters new generations of budding and successful entrepreneurs. Through mentoring, competitions, and events like StartUp Tech Valley, students are encouraged to learn more about the business aspects of start-ups and early stage companies and make connections with their peers and potential investors.

Architecture Highlights

The School of Architecture Fabrication facility boasts a recently expanded shop with an eclectic and unique grouping of equipment and technical abilities. Centrally located on the zero level of the Greene Building, it is convenient to the studios above. The shop is usually open 7 days during the academic year. The shop is one of four academic shops on campus in addition to one professional machine shop and a materials testing lab. Subdivided for safety, the shop's five separate areas allow for a healthy and productive work environment.

The Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies interweaves life sciences, physical sciences, and engineering into the fields of biotechnology and medicine, opening exciting new pathways to innovation and discovery. From complex biological networks to nanoscale assemblies that mimic biological processes, the center is a powerhouse of academic and research advancement. More than 200 scientists and engineers are working here to uncover the molecular basis of biological mechanisms and disease, using biological systems as the basis for new therapeutics, and developing new cellular niches critical in tissue regeneration. The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Research Core is used for solution structure determination of small molecules (proteins, carbohydrates and macromolecular complexes) at atomic resolution.

The Product Design and Innovation studio has flexible student workstations, a conference and media presentation area, access to a wireless network and printing, and a small workshop with basic hand and electronic tools. The core of PDI- and what distinguishes our program as interdisciplinary design rather than just engineering design or industrial design- is our interdisciplinary studio sequence. With a broader scope than typical industrial design or engineering programs, we seek to bridge these disciplines to create new products, services, and media in the context of social needs and environmental concerns. The interdisciplinary design studios provide a forum to integrate skills to solve long term and emerging problems of society.
