Founded in 1870, Missouri University of Science and Technology, was founded as a school for mining and metallurgical industries and expanded with a greater emphasis on research and graduate education, awarding its first master's degree in the early 1900s and the first doctorate in 1926. Missouri S&T has a total student enrollment of approximately 9,000; about 1,800 of which are graduate students. There are over 20 doctoral programs, more than 30 master's programs, and approximately 70 graduate certificates offered at S&T.
