The new Life Sciences and Biotechnology building is our latest investment in fostering this team approach, providing state of the art labs and meeting spaces designed for effective collaboration between researchers.

The East Carolina Diabetes and Obesity Institute is another example of ECU's commitment to team research. Interdisciplinary teams of researchers are investigating the underlying causes and potential treatments for diseases related to disorders of metabolism. A variety of studies are conducted, ranging from basic lab experiments to translational and community intervention studies in humans. The institute has also developed an international reputation in a specific area of research – mitochondrial biology. This effort is supported by a mitochondrial analysis core facility with more specialized equipment and greater capacity for this type of research than possibly any other institution in the country.

To further support ECU's team approach to research, the university maintains an impressive array of core facilities, providing researchers from across campus access to state-of-the-art equipment. Researchers at ECU have access to facilities for Mass Spectrometry, Genomics, Environmental Research, Water Quality, and the only Particle Accelerator in the UNC system. The Imaging Core Facility serves as one of these shared resources and provides a comprehensive imaging core for both fixed samples and live cell work with the purpose of advancing research programs in cancer, pulmonary, infectious, metabolic, reproductive and cardiovascular diseases.

Located on ECU's Health Sciences campus, the Human Movement Analysis Lab examines links between movement patterns, tissue forces, and musculoskeletal injury during exercise, sport, and training activities. The facility includes 3D motion capture systems, force plates for analysis of over-ground movements, a fully instrumented treadmill for gait analysis, and other equipment. Three-dimensional movement and kinetic analyses inform computer simulations of the musculoskeletal system to estimate tissue loads during activity and identify potentially detrimental mechanics. These tools are also used to assess the influence of environmental changes, exercise, and movement retraining interventions as they relate to musculoskeletal health and performance.

The ECU Water Resources Center exemplifies the team approach to research, bringing together experts from five colleges and 15 departments to enhance the understanding of water issues through research and education. The center is a leader in developing and applying new ideas to improve human, natural, and engineered systems to ensure a resilient and sustainable future for communities that will lead to sustainable water management at home and around the world. The center maintains a water quality laboratory and provides access to a range of analytical and field-based equipment that can be utilized by active affiliates of the center for water quality, water quantity, and geophysical investigations.

ECU's Outer Banks Campus is home to the Coastal Studies Institute, a multi-institutional partnership led by East Carolina University. The Institute brings together researchers from different disciplines to answer pressing coastal questions. Coastal scientists research processes that drive coastal systems, their effect on communities, and ways to become more resilient in the face of coastal hazards. Ecologists study estuarine systems and how we can ensure healthy coastal ecosystems for the future. Oceanographers and coastal engineers explore how to harness the power of the Gulf Stream and other renewable ocean energy sources to broaden our energy portfolio. Maritime archaeologists uncover new shipwrecks, celebrating the vast maritime heritage of eastern North Carolina.

The Phelps Archaeology Lab, located on our main campus, has the capability of supporting multiple projects simultaneously, including projects from the earliest Paleoindian cultures to the latest historical periods. The lab is equipped to handle artifact processing and cataloging as well as drafting and photography for report preparation. There is sufficient field equipment to outfit multiple field crews including ground penetrating radar. Named for its founding director, the Phelps Archaeology Laboratory is administered by the Department of Anthropology and serves to foster research and education concerning the history and prehistory of eastern North Carolina.

ECU continues to develop programs and facilities that sharpen our focus on ensuring that even more ideas, talent and development can connect and flourish at ECU. Located adjacent to ECU's new Life Sciences and Biotechnology Building, Intersect East will be the latest addition to the East Carolina Research and Innovation Campus. ECU and Elliott Sidewalk Communities are partnering to create the 19-acre, 14-building development that will feature innovative lab and office space, residential space, restaurants and retail, as well as a park. Intersect East provides a crossroads where academia, business, culture and community converge, opening more opportunities for new ventures, growing businesses and industry, and collaborations with faculty and students.
