Gardner Steel Conference Center (GSCC)

Gardner Steel Conference Center is home to the Dietrich School's Study Lab and Office of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity. In Study Lab, students are empowered to experiment with study skills, find what works best for them, and design their own personal study strategy. Study Lab is staffed by students who have mastered some of the Dietrich School's most challenging courses; they're on hand to share insider tips for success so all students can get the grades they want. From tutoring to drop-in study groups to online resources, Study Lab has something to help every student succeed at Pitt. The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) connects students to research opportunities from across the disciplines. From art to music to economics to history to bio and chem, the OUR pairs undergraduates with expert faculty mentors so they can get started on research as early as their first year.

Thackeray Hall

Thackeray (Thak-er-E) Hall is a conveniently located hub for Dietrich (Dee-trick) School students who want to customize their academic plans with their personal advisor in the Academic Advising Center, complete administrative tasks in the Office of Student Records, or access exclusive programming to support their transition to the University in the Office of First-Year Programs. Students are encouraged to make the most of their time here by creating customized schedules that incorporate their goals and their passions. For some, that might mean adding an internship or studying abroad, for others it could be volunteering at a nonprofit or auditioning for a theater production. Wherever your interests point you, the Dietrich School can help you get there.

Chevron Science Center

Chevron Science Center is home to our Department of Chemistry, one of the largest undergraduate chemistry departments in the country. Chevron has recently undergone comprehensive renovations, including full modernization of instructional and research labs, as well as student meeting and study spaces. In addition to a standard chemistry major, the department offers six special options for students with specific interests in combining chemistry with other subjects such as Business, Communication, and Education. That's just one of many ways that departments in the Dietrich School provide students with the broad-based, real-world academic foundations they'll need for future success.

Clapp/Langley/Crawford

The Clapp/Langley/Crawford Complex is where you'll find our Departments of Biological Sciences and Neuroscience. This complex includes newly renovated microbiology and biology labs and four floors of new research space, featuring resources like wet labs and computational work stations. Undergraduate degrees in Bio and Neuro not only fulfill basic science requirements for admission to medical school, but also prepare students for other graduate and professional school programs, as well as careers in health care, industry, and education. Students in both departments are encouraged to take advantage of experiential learning opportunities such as academic internships, teaching assistantships, and faculty-supervised original research.

Bellefield Hall

Bellefield Hall includes a recently renovated auditorium seating 575 people, rehearsal spaces, graduate student offices, and the state-of-the-art William R. Robinson Digital Recording Studio, a 32 track digital recording facility that serves as both studio and classroom and offers students hands on experience in the latest recording techniques and technology. Many of the department's concerts, most of which are free to students, are held in the auditorium. Bellefield is also home to one of Pitt's indoor swimming pools and a fully equipped fitness center that's used by students, faculty, and staff.

Stephen Foster Memorial

The Stephen Foster Memorial is home to most mainstage productions of our Department of Theatre Arts. The building contains the Charity Randall Theatre and the Henry Heymann (Hay-man) Theatre. Undergraduate theatre majors can specialize in one or more of three areas of concentration, all of which blend experience in production with foundational training and advanced study. Graduates regularly secure internships, apprenticeships, and employment in theatre production and have gone on to graduate programs in performance, design, and history. Others find that their degrees provide excellent preparation for careers emphasizing communication, project management, and creativity. Think you might be the next Meryl Streep? Bring it! All Pitt students are welcome at auditions.

Frick Fine Arts Building

The Frick Fine Arts Building is home to our Department of Studio Arts and our Department of History of Art and Architecture, including our Architectural Studies Program. Students pursuing undergraduate degrees in these programs complete a broad range of coursework that prepares them for careers in architecture, historic preservation, and graphic design, as well as graduate and professional degree programs including business, education, and even medicine. In addition to classrooms and an auditorium, the building includes the University Art Gallery, a renowned fine arts library, and studio space for students enrolled in drawing, painting, sculpting, printmaking, digital photography, and other hands-on art courses.

William Wesley Posvar Hall

Posvar Hall hosts our social sciences departments—Africana Studies, Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science, and Sociology. Undergraduates enrolled in these programs typically supplement their coursework with experiential learning—recent internships and field work opportunities have included authenticating artifacts on archeological digs; conducting oral history interviews; designing museum exhibits; and, working on local, state, and national political campaigns. By adding Study Abroad experiences to their Pitt portfolios, social sciences students graduate with standout resumes and well-informed perspectives on global issues. Posvar sits on the site of Forbes Field, former home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Home plate remains so you can imagine hitting the homerun to end the 1960 World Series.

Hillman Library

Focused primarily on the humanities and the social sciences, Hillman Library contains approximately 1.5 million volumes, over 200 computers, study capacity for 1,500 users, and several special collections. For many Dietrich School students, Hillman is the perfect, quiet oasis for cracking the books. When you're ready to refuel, visit the Cup and Chaucer Café on the ground floor to grab a coffee and browse the bestsellers. Looking for advice about writing a research proposal or applying for awards and grants? Look no further—mentors from our Office of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity hold regular Curiosity Hours at Cup and Chaucer and they'd love to help. Just outside of the Cup and Chaucer, you'll find Mobile Study Lab most evenings during the week: There's no appouintment needed to drop in to these study groups, led by Study Lab's expert peer tutors.

Cathedral of Learning

The jewel in the Pitt campus crown is the Cathedral of Learning, a 42-story Gothic Revival skyscraper that was commissioned in 1921. The Cathedral, known affectionately by many of our students as "Cathy," is home to more than a dozen of the Dietrich School's humanities departments, including English, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Theatre Arts. Recent renovations have included upgrades to instructional and meeting areas, the creation of designated space for a Humanities Center, and the opening of a new suite housing three of the school's popular interdisciplinary programs, Cultural Studies, Film Studies, and Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies.
