Welcome to the Yale Science Tour. My name is Jon and I'm a sophomore majoring in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. At Yale, science students get the best of both big and small. There are more than 1,200 active labs on campus, and hundreds of research positions available, with more than 100 paid positions reserved for first-year students. On Science Hill, students collaborate across disciplines while working closely with some of the world’s most accomplished and ambitious scientists.

Kroon Hall is home to the Yale School of the Environment, the first school of its kind in the United States. The building features a 100-kilowatt solar array, geothermal energy system, and rainwater harvesting system that uses aquatic plants to clean water before it is used in the building. The interdisciplinary Environmental Studies major is closely connected with the School of the Environment and undergraduates have the option of pursuing a 5th year master's degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Management.

The Yale Science Building is a new seven story interdisciplinary research center filled with cutting-edge technology and labs for more than 500 scientists. The YSB includes a cryo-electron microscopy facility, the Yale Quantitative Biology Institute, chemical synthesis labs, and a rooftop greenhouse. The building’s popular Steep café is a great spot to connect after a day in the lab. The café offers coffee, smoothies, sandwiches and snacks with a 24-hour self-checkout system.

The O.C. Marsh Lecture Hall in the Yale Science Building is named after one of the great figures in American paleontology who established Yale’s Peabody Museum of Natural History more than 100 years ago. Marsh’s expansive collection of skeletons and fossils became the foundation of the museum’s collection, which now contains more than 14 million objects. A major renovation of the Peabody Museum will update their gallery to feature more of this incredible collection for visitors. Students attending class in the Marsh Lecture Hall can see fossils of Triceratops and Pteranodon in the lobby.

The Wright Lab explores the invisible universe, using some of Yale’s most advanced scientific instruments. Through a research program that combines nuclear, particle, and astrophysics, the lab’s state-of-the-art research facilities, technical infrastructure, and collaboration spaces support innovative instrumentation development and hands-on research. Built on the site of a decommissioned tandem Van de Graff particle accelerator, researchers at the Wright Lab seek answers to some of the most pressing questions in physics, including the properties of dark matter and the states of matter in the early universe.

Yale students interested in pursuing a career in medicine have immediate access to the Yale School of Medicine and Yale School of Public Health, located just a short walk away from the residential colleges. Hundreds of undergraduates pursue research internships in Yale labs and participate in clinical work at the renowned Yale New Haven Hospital. Dedicated pre-health professions advisors in Yale’s Office of Career Strategy help students prepare for medical school through coursework, research, and volunteer opportunities that are available to all students regardless of their major. The Yale School of Medicine is typically the number #1 destination for Yale College graduates who go on to medical school.
