A mile from Woodland Road, Chatham Eastside is home to our School of Health Sciences and interior architecture programs and is in the heart of one of Pittsburgh’s fastest growing and historic neighborhoods. When this building was renovated, our architects used sustainable design practices, recycled materials, and energy-efficient lighting to create academic and social spaces within a green environment. In the Occupational Therapy Skills lab, students to set up play areas to help children build developmental skills; make adaptive equipment and splints; practice feeding techniques; and more. There's also an OT apartment for students to practice teaching clients how to transfer in and out of bed; get dressed; transfer in and out of the shower; and cook in the kitchen following an injury or illness.

The physician assistant skills lab is a large open space with exam tables for students to practice their physical examination skills on each other in small groups. The lab is equipped with Welch Allyn wall equipment, which is the standard in clinical practice, as well as a Student Auscultation Manikin, Welch Allyn Retinavue Camera, and multiple manikins. Our lab facility includes six private exam rooms set up as a typical family practice office, which are used primarily for assessment of skills. Labs consist of approximately 40 students at a time, with multiple faculty present in each lab for demonstration and feedback on technique. The lab space is also used for medical simulation and for learning procedures such as phlebotomy, splinting, and injections.

The physical therapy skills lab is a large open lab for up to 40 students. The lab has plinths and mat tables, similar to those found in any physical therapy clinic. In the lab, the students practice a variety of skills, depending on which course in the curriculum they’re in. Some examples of these skills include measuring the range of motion of the ankle joint, checking vital signs following exercise, mobilizing a stiff shoulder, helping a child with cerebral palsy practice standing up from their wheelchair, and assisting a patient who is relearning how to walk after a stroke.

Room 290 is a stadium seating classroom that seats 100 students. It has two projector screens and a large whiteboard for instructors to use during class, making it easy for students to see from all angles. All the PA lecture classes are held in this room.

Home to Chatham’s Interior Architecture program, one of the three accredited interior architecture programs in Pennsylvania, the Interior Architecture studios are outfitted with adjustable drafting tables where students complete projects individually and in groups. Each studio is also equipped with mobile whiteboards for studio-based lectures, and individual or group brainstorming. Teaching studios have monitors and projectors for presentations and instructor lectures.

The Prototyping and Design Lab is a design lab sponsored by the Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship that is open to students, faculty, staff, and anyone from the Pittsburgh community who is interested in designing and prototyping products. It features a variety of easy-to-use tools and equipment from local startups and established companies. Craft materials, flexible small-space tools such as a multi-functional 3D desktop printer, sewing machines, microcontrollers, robotics kits, and other fine machining and textile processing tools are all available for use. The lab also hosts local subject matter experts who facilitate hands-on workshops for anyone looking to learn how to use the equipment. This is your last stop! The Chatham Circle is a large study area on the second floor, equipped with tables, chairs, and mobile whiteboards for students to use. There is also space for students to lounge on comfortable couches and chairs, and a great area for eating and taking a break.

In this area, students get together to share a meal, work on a group project, or study for their next exam. A microwave, coffee makers, refrigerators, a sink, and other kitchen supplies are available for student use. Plants help make the space more green.

At the Eastside Café, you can enjoy a slice of pizza made from homemade pizza dough, a burger off the Grill, or a fresh-made sandwich on our local bakery bread from the Deli.
