Welcome to Lenox Hill Hospital. My name is Dr. Daniel Baker, and I'm the Executive Director here at Lenox Hill. We're so pleased to have you visit us. Lenox Hill is the Manhattan campus for Northwell Health. Northwell is in the top 5 best places to work in the healthcare field according to fortune magazine. U.S. news and World Report rate Lenox hill as the fourth best hospital in New York State and in the top 50 nationally and nine adult specialties. The Lenox Hill campus comprises the main complex on Park Ave and E 77th St. as well as our facilities at Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital on 65th St., Lenox Hill Greenwich Village on the site of the former St. Vincent's Hospital, and several other practices located throughout the city. We're one of the top 10 hospitals in the New York region as ranked by US News and World Report, and we're ranked in the top 50 nationally in several medical and surgical areas. In addition, we were recently named a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Over 250 trainees in 25 residency and fellowship programs care for a diverse population of patients who come to us from all over New York and New Jersey. Our faculty publish over 125 papers per year in prestigious medical journals and also consult on national and local news broadcasts. Northwell Health and particularly Lenox Hill fosters a strong sense of collegiality and inter-professional respect. And at the end of the day, we enjoy superb restaurants, art museums and galleries and all of the fabulous entertainment and activities that have made New York City the center of the universe. Over the past year and a half, Lenox Hill successfully treated thousands of COVID patients with mortality rates that are a third of the New York City average. I am particularly proud of the work Lenox Hill has done to keep patients, visitors and staff safe and well. Our institution's efforts to create a healthy work environment have allowed all of our professionals to do their best work putting our patients and our trainees at the center of everything we do. My name is Dr. Yves Duroseau, and I’m Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. Each year our ED sees 55,000 patients and we admit about 25% of them. We also have a free-standing Emergency Department at Lenox Hill Greenwich Village that sends an additional 6% admissions up to the hospital. Our patients come from all over the city, and sometimes from even further. At Lenox Hill, we love having the opportunity to teach the residents and fellows that come through our ED. One of our major projects this year has been to train virtually every physician at Lenox Hill in the art of "Relationship Centered Communication." This three-function model involves establishing trust with the patient, co-constructing their story, and forming a therapeutic alliance. We use video and role-playing to make sure our patients feel cared for and understood, and to help our physicians provide compassionate, personalized care.

Hi, I'm Andrew Price, the chief resident in the department of Internal Medicine.. The Cafeteria at Lenox Hill is the social hub of the institution. Every day, our food services provide a wonderful selection of healthy choices. Lenox Hill’s residents and fellows are issued tokens for each day they work at the hospital that are good for one full meal. We can come down and grab something fast, or sit and refuel. We just flip the cashier a token and we're on our way. It's convenient and enjoyable, and makes it easy to catch up with my friends over lunch or a quick bite.

Hi. I’m Dr. Lesley Michael, a Lenox Hill Psychiatrist, and I represent the hospital’s resident mental health program. I’m here today to talk briefly about wellness. At Lenox Hill and Northwell we take your well being seriously. We use a layered approach to help you maintain wellness throughout your training. In layer one we have the House Staff Association, individual program leadership and the hospital administration all providing support for social gathering as permitted as well as activities like the Wellness Olympics to put some fun and joy into the practice of medicine and by fostering social connectivity and comradery along the way. In layer two there are numerous interventions in place that can help trainees navigate challenging times. These include patient experience huddles, Schwartz Rounds, town halls and code Lavender. Layer three is for trainees who are looking for more individualized treatment and support. Lenox Hill’s resident mental health program supported by the hospital and GME offers free mental health treatment including assessments, medication management, psychotherapy and assistance with referrals when appropriate. Our team has dedicated time to treat Lenox Hill residents and fellows in addition to offering workshops to individual departments around self-care, mindfulness and stress management. To date our program has seen over 25% of the trainees at Lenox Hill and this model will soon be replicated throughout the Northwell system. We are all here to help and support you as you embark on the next phase on your exciting journey in training.

Hello my name is Dr. Andrew Price and Im the chief resident from the internal medicine program. This is Victory Greens. Lenox Hill is the only hospital in New York with a rooftop garden. We can come here whenever we want to sit down, relax, and enjoy the weather for awhile. The WiFi is perfect out here, and sometimes the farmer even comes by and lets us snip some of the herbs to take home with us. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to go and supplement my Vitamin D.

Hi, you've arrived at the regional floor. Here, we are part of a large interdisciplinary team which also entail representatives from social work, case management, physical and occupational therapy and more. On the medical floor we care for patients that are regionalized to a specific floor. All members of the team help care for your patient and facilitate the transition of care from the inpatient to outpatient setting. Many of our residents go on to match in our various fellowship programs at Lenox Hill such as cardiovascular, gastroenterology, and pulmonary medicine to name a few. Hi, I’m Nader Gabra, one of the senior Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellows at Lenox Hill. Our ICU is a great place to learn. We have a 12-bed MICU, though our patient volume usually hovers slightly above that, and we routinely board in other ICUs. Because our combined catchment area includes the Upper East Side and Greenwich Village, we see a wide variety of pathologies. The critical care faculty here make for amazing mentors, and they’ve helped me grow my skills and knowledge base. The nursing staff is also some of the best I’ve ever worked with. We’re all practically family.

Hi, I'm Pria Gupta, one of the first year Medicine Residents. This is our lounge on 4 Loggia. They tell me that it's recently been refurbished with new couches and a third workstation. Sometimes we come here to eat or take in a virtual conference here, but mostly, this is where we get to be together and support each other. This year we started our residency with a scavenger hunt to get to know the hospital. We wore masks and went around in small groups to maintain social distancing, but it was a super fun way to get to know Lenox Hill and everywhere we would be training. Hello everyone, my name is Dan Hogan, and I’m a second-year gastroenterology fellow. Welcome to our endoscopy suite! This is where we do most of our “hands-on” interventions, such as endoscopies, colonoscopies, ERCPs, and EUSs, using state of the art technology and techniques alongside our teaching faculty. As a “home-grown” GI candidate, I completed my internal medicine training at Lenox Hill and was excited to continue my training here. The experience here is really made by the people, as well as the breadth of pathology and experiences offered, the world-class teaching, and a vision that pushes us forward everyday as we continue to expand. Hi, my name is Peter Sayegh. I’m currently a third-year fellow in cardiovascular medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital. Lenox Hill offers a wide variety of training programs in different aspects of cardiovascular medicine, including general cardiovascular medicine, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, structural heart, preventive cardiology, and advanced imaging. This variety gives fellows an unparalleled opportunity for collaboration with regard to patient care and education. The various disciplines represented by the trainees enrich the robust educational environment, and the educational experience as a whole is greatly enhanced by the collegial interactions of cardiovascular attendings, fellows, house staff, and students.

I really enjoyed my training at Lenox Hill Hospital. I really enjoyed my first through the last day. I do remember my first day, like it was yesterday – I remember being called towards the end of the day for hypercalcemia, more than 22, can you imagine? More than 22, I’ve never seen prior. I also do believe that the atmosphere is very collegial. The staff and attending are very supportive. All I can tell you is that my training at Lenox Hill was complete. Complete in the sense that I had exposure to different CRT? modalities. I had a chance to be exposed to a myriad of cases…encompassing as well as …lactic acidosis, …lithium toxicity, aspirin toxicity, hyponatremia, which I used to say, hyponatremia comes in different flavor. I remember being very intimidated towards hyponatremia at the beginning of my training but I’m very happy I can manage it with closed eyes. Speaking of COVID, COVID was a tough time, not only because it was a sad situation but Census was very high – up to 80 patient per day. I was personally affected by it; it was very tough. Looking back, I’m very happy because I was able to get Good out of a bad situation, COVID strengthen it was an opportunity for me to learn how to plan my day ahead and to walk by prioritization I'm very happy and fortunate because I’m know now how to plan my day ahead.

Hi, I'm Donna Bahroloomi, and I'm a third-year General Surgery resident at Lenox Hill. What I love about our program is that we're a close, tight-knit department within the expansive, bustling environment of New York City. Lenox has the perfect balance of being a small program with a huge breadth of both everyday and complex cases. Our amazing PAs support our work every day, and allow us to maximize the time we spend training in the OR. Lenox Hill is always seeking the next generation of surgical technology, and our extensive experience in robotic surgery makes this the perfect place to prepare for a career in the constantly evolving field of surgery. And of course, you can’t beat this view on the way to the OR every morning!

Hi, I’m Sam Lee, the third-year vascular surgery resident. This is our hybrid OR, which gives us the ability to perform combined endovascular and open cases for patients with more complicated cases. At Lenox Hill, we see a wide range of pathologies, from complex aortic aneurysms to congenital vascular malformations. I came to Lenox to learn in a small, close-knit environment that still has access to a large volume of cases. Our surgical PAs are also top-notch and give us the support we need to help get us into the OR and make the transition into residency much easier.

My name is Ilana, and I'm a second-year resident in Northwell Health's otolaryngology program. I feel extremely fortunate to be in this program because it gives us the opportunity to work with highly accomplished faculty who are fellowship-trained across all subspecialties in our field. As residents in a new program, we’re fortunate enough to train with residents from various New York City programs, while also playing an integral role in the future development of our own program. What I love most about the program is that I’m able to both live and work in the heart of one of the greatest cities in the world, allowing me to obtain expert otolaryngology training while making the most of my time off.

Lenox Hill was my top choice for residency because of the tight-knit atmosphere within the vibrant and diverse culture of New York City. The program at Lenox Hill truly feels like a big family, and the camaraderie amongst residents, faculty, and staff is second to none. The residents form close relationships with the faculty early on, and gain a significant amount of operative and hands-on experience from day one. I’m Jay Emlen, one of the chief podiatry residents. I picked Lenox Hill because it’s one of the preeminent hospitals in New York City as well as part of a well-respected healthcare system. Lenox Hill has top-notch clinical and support staff, and I knew they’d help me continue my academic development and achieve excellence in podiatric medicine, surgery, and research. I’ve had the opportunity to train with premiere podiatric and orthopedic physicians and to pursue research studies and multiple publications. As a result of my training, I feel confident and prepared to begin my podiatric journey, and certainly look forward to a professional future as a member of this wonderful institution.

Hi, I’m Joseph Sarcona, the chief resident of urology. Lenox Hill, part of the Northwell Health System, is an amazing academic program with a community feel in arguably THE biggest city in the nation. Our urologic experience covers every major subspecialty and offers a lot of hands-on operative experience. The close knit team of urology residents and PAs feels like a family, looking out for one another and growing together with the help of our faculty mentors. Now that I’m nearing the end of my residency, I feel confident that I received training that will allow me to enter any facet of urology I want.

Hi, I’m Ariel Yashua one of the third-year residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology. At Lenox Hill, we have over 4000 deliveries each year. Our excellent team of attending physician, residents, physician extenders, nurses and support staff take exceptional care of our patients. We believe in a collaborative approach to care, and our antepartum inpatient unit on the sixth floor is attached to Labor and Delivery, where we have a triage area, twelve labor rooms, and three operating rooms. There’s a safety officer at the hospital at all times to provide a supportive, safe learning environment during your residency.

This is the main radiology reading room for residents, where clinicians come for consultations and review imaging studies. The reading room serves as a hub where we develop relationships and rapport with members of other specialties, interactions that help us to expand our role in clinical decision-making. The department also provides outpatient imaging at Lenox Health Greenwich Village (LHGV), an 11,000-square-foot, comprehensive imaging center in the heart of Greenwich Village in downtown Manhattan. Working at LHGV allows us to experience another part of New York City while working in a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility.

The grossing room has six full-time PAs for approximately 25,000 annual surgical specimens, which makes our PA-to-specimen ratio among the highest in the nation. We also have growing digital pathology capabilities, with a whole slide-scanner and remote viewing. We have eight residents and a surgical pathology fellow. The residents’ schedule is flexible and has generous elective time. We rotate at the NYC ME and also participate in forensic autopsies.

Over the next few minutes, I will highlight our strong commitment to health equity, which is deeply ingrained in our organization's DNA. For four consecutive years, Northwell Health has been rated the number one health system by Diversity Inc magazine. We take great pride in this recognition, and many others, as we continuously strive to create a culture that embraces and celebrates diversity. Throughout the continuum of medical education, from the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell to all of our 27 clinical campuses, we prioritize educating ALL employees on important JEDI topics Our health disparities curriculum includes topics such as implicit bias, social determinants of health, relationship-centered communication, microaggressions and allyship, and cultural humility. By integrating these important areas into our training programs’ education, we can promote more equitable and patient-centered care. We provide novel training programs, such as our Mentorship and Professionalism in Training, or MAP-IT 2.0, whose curriculum focuses on antiracism. Learners across the health system can take this course, including medical students, trainees, and faculty. It equips them with the necessary knowledge and skills to combat racism in healthcare to promote a more inclusive environment for everyone. Health equity is a fundamental component of our Quality Improvement curriculum, and we believe that achieving health equity is a critical outcome that we strive for in all aspects of our work. To support our faculty and supervising trainees in teaching about health equity and antiracism, whether in the classroom or at the bedside, we have developed Just-in-Time Teaching infographics. These resources provide evidence-based techniques and ensure that our educators have access to the most effective teaching methods at their fingertips. Beyond training and education, we actively engage with underrepresented minority medical students, post-graduate trainees, and faculty in all our facilities. We employ holistic recruiting strategies that ensure we attract a diverse pool of talented individuals who reflect the communities we serve. We offer mentorship and professional development opportunities for our faculty to enhance the retention and success of our diverse team members. Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment is a top priority for us, as we recognize the impact it has on our diverse patient population. In addition to our internal efforts, we actively reach out to our communities through various initiatives. We participate in health fairs, provide shelter medicine practices, organize educational activities in the community, engage in social justice projects, and offer international health opportunities. By doing so, we aim to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.
