Welcome to the University of Tennessee! We are excited to show you our campus. The Student Union serves as the living room of UT, and offers students the opportunity to eat, study, work, and relax in the heart of campus. It houses our Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life, the Jones Center for Leadership and Service, the Dean of Students Office, the Center for Student Engagement, the Visitors Center, the Center for Career Development, the Pride Center, the VolShop and VolTech. The Student Union also offers a plethora of dining options, including: Chick-fil-A, Panda Express, Starbucks, and much more. Haslam College of Business

The Haslam College of Business offers many nationally recognized majors and minors at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Haslam also houses the Masters Investment Learning Center, which is home to 20 Bloomberg terminals, this gives students the opportunity to manage portfolios of assets worth more than half a million dollars. In addition, Haslam offers numerous opportunites to intern and study abroad, the most notable being the Global Leadership Scholars Program. Beside the Haslam College of Business is the Claxton Complex, which houses the College of Education, Health & Human Sciences. This college includes majors ranging from Kinesiology, to Nutrition.

The Torchbearer Statue

The Torchbearer is the academic mascot of UT. His creed states, “One that beareth a torch shadoweth oneself to give light to others.” This creed symbolizes our commitment to the people and communities throughout campus. At UT, we embody this spirit in our academic achievements, leadership and service programs. The Torchbearer is a reminder that we’re part of something larger than ourselves. Behind the Torchbearer is the College of Communication & Information, where students gain hands-on professional experience through any of our undergraduate majors. Art & Architecture Building

The Art and Architecture Building houses the College of Architecture and Design and the School of Art. This building includes a 120-seat auditorium; individual student workstations in open studio spaces; a gallery and sculpture court; photo labs; metal shop, wood shop; print shop and 3D makerspace. Throughout the semester, the building will display student projects in the Ewing Gallery, located on the ground floor. No matter what major you choose in the College of Architecture and Design, you’ll have many opportunities for cross-collaboration and to work with all design disciplines in the college. All students learn from award-winning educators, including published authors, Fulbright Scholars, AIA Fellows and other amazing professors.

The Rock

The Rock serves as the central student message board at the University of Tennessee, and is the only place on campus where graffiti is allowed and, actually, encouraged! It is tradition to paint The Rock at least once during your UT career. If you paint The Rock, be sure to take a picture because it’s been known to be painted and re-painted multiple times a day. Behind the Rock, is the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center, which houses the School of Music and our world-renowned Pride of the Southland Marching Band.

The Student Health Center is our doctor’s office on campus. Home to Primary Care, Acute Care, a Women’s Health Clinic, Physical Therapy, an Allergy and Immunization Clinic, Mental Health Counseling, and a full-service Pharmacy. Tennessee Recreational Center for Students

The Tennessee Recreational Center for Students, or TRECS, provides recreational experiences that enhance the growth & well-being of our students. TRECS boasts four outdoor multipurpose courts, a 1/7th-mile indoor track, an indoor and outdoor pool, two racquetball courts, multiple studio fitness rooms, and a main fitness area with over 80 pieces of cardiovascular equipment and over 100 strength training stations. TRECS is also home to our UT Outdoor Pursuits office, which connects students with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Tennessee River through equipment rentals and guide-led group trips.

Herbert College of Agriculture

Herbert College of Agriculture offers many different majors ranging from Biosystems Engineering to Animal Science. The Herbert College of Agriculture is preparing today’s students to be tomorrow’s leaders in the fields of agriculture and natural resources. The University of Tennessee is also home to 1 of the nation’s 30 accredited Colleges of Veterinary Medicine. The UT College of Veterinary Medicine is a graduate college that supports both a small and large animal hospital on campus.

The West Campus Dining Facility is a new, $234 million dollar dining facility that boasts an 8-Platform Fresh Food Company Dining Facility and a full service Chick Fil A across 73,256 square feet. In all our Fresh Food Company Dining Facilities, students get all-you-care-to-eat meals with a variety of stations ranging from a full fresh salad bar to an international station. For those with dietary restrictions, Fresh Food Company offers a Vegan station, a Made Without Gluten station, and individual accommodations as needed.

Fred D. Brown Jr. Residence Hall

Fred D. Brown Jr. Residence Hall is a 250,000 square foot co-ed facility housing freshmen and upperclassmen. Brown Hall is a semi-suite style hall and features quad shared and double shared living options. On the ground floor, two dining options are offered: Twisted Taco and Subway. Study lounges are found on each floor, and free laundry services are on the ground floor. Brown Hall is one of many residence halls on UT’s campus. Each residence hall provides safe, comfortable spaces you’ll be happy to call home during your time at UT.

Frieson Black Cultural Center

The Frieson Black Cultural Center (FBCC) supports students by providing programs and services that holistically address the cultural, educational, and civic growth of our community. The FBCC contributes to academic success and enhances the institutional efforts in retaining and graduating underrepresented students for a diverse and complex world. The FBCC provides academic support to all students through tutorial and book loan programs, mentoring for first year students through the Minority Achievement Program, the Legends Lecture Series, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration, a multicultural graduation, tailgates, Sunday dinners, and the Homecoming Southeastern Stompfest.

John C. Hodges Library

In the heart of campus, is John C. Hodges Library. It is the largest library in the state of Tennessee. The seven floors have space to study, research, relax, and create. Be sure to consult our Library Research Assistants for help narrowing down sources from our collection of over 3.5 million volumes. The Library also hosts a Math Tutorial Center and a Writing Center for anyone that may need supplementary instruction. Finally, One Stop Student Services is located on the ground floor to assist anyone with questions regarding financial aid, bill payment, registering for classes, or your application process.

Neyland Stadium

There’s nothing like Saturday’s in the South. Located on the banks of the Tennessee River, Neyland Stadium, named for General Robert Neyland, is home to the Tennessee Volunteers football team. Known for its iconic orange and white checkerboard endzones, Neyland Stadium provides an incredibly energetic sporting environment in one of the largest stadiums in the country. The most recognizable building at the University of Tennessee is Ayres Hall. This building is home to the College of Arts and Sciences as well as the mathematics department. The distinctive checkerboard architectural design at the top of the clocktower is a point of pride for the UT community. This checkerboard has been replicated in the endzones of Neyland Stadium, the basketball courts in Thompson–Boling Arena and other countless locations on campus. Strong Hall

Strong Hall is a $144 million academic science structure which fully contains the Anthropology and Earth & Planetary Sciences departments. General Biology and Chemistry teaching labs are also located in the building providing students with a space to perform lab experiments. Notably, Strong Hall was designed to allow easy collaboration between floors and laboratories in order to foster expanded research and more interdisciplinary work. Across Cumberland Avenue is Henson Hall, which is home to our College of Social Work. The College of Social Work provides professional social work education programs that prepare undergraduate and graduate students alike for social work practice with leadership, research, and academia.

Intramural Sports

The UT Intramural Sports program is dedicated to providing all members of the university community opportunities to participate in recreational events in a fun environment - regardless of age, gender, skill level or past experience. The program offers a wide range of team, dual, and individual activities aimed at maximizing student participation. Activities include flag football, sand volleyball, tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer, dodgeball, racquetball, kickball, inner tube water polo, ultimate Frisbee – just to name a few! The RecSports Field Complex, located off campus, boasts two softball fields, four turf fields, four natural grass fields, and three sand volleyball courts.

Downtown Knoxville

The city of Knoxville is located in East Tennessee, and we are located right beside downtown Knoxville. It’s just a short walk from our campus to the heart of downtown and Market Square. Market Square is a historic, large pedestrian mall that’s home to local shops and restaurants, as well as festivals, city programming, and the farmers market. If you are not a city person and prefer the outdoors, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is only 45 minutes from campus. If you prefer to stay closer to campus, the Ijams Nature Center and Mead’s Quarry are a short 5 minute drive away.
