Welcome to Salus at Drexel University. The institution embodies the more than 105 -year history of our founding college, the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. From our establishment as a University in 2008 to today, which includes our merger with Drexel University, pending approval by the United States Department of Education, specialized accreditors, and additional third parties, the Salus mission has always focused on advancing integrated healthcare through innovative education, research and clinical services. The Elkins Park, Pennsylvania campus is only minutes from the center of Philadelphia, the historical heart of the country, and is also situated near other beautiful areas - all within a two-hour drive. Learning Resource Center

The Learning Resource Center operates as both a media-rich resource center and the hub of the suburban Elkins Park campus. The modern library facility includes the Help Desk service center, a coffee/tea bar, collaborative study rooms, individual seating for quiet studying, 20 desktop computers with access to printers and a 50-person classroom. In a healthcare environment where multidisciplinary collaboration is the norm, Salus at Drexel promotes an environment where students can learn collaboratively with their peers.

Activities of Daily Living Lab

The campus maintains several instructional labs for academic programs, including the Activities of Daily Living Lab, or ADL Lab for short. Recently updated and relocated to a windowed space on the fourth floor of our West building, the ADL Lab is an important resource for students in several programs within the University. The ADL Lab is the primary learning lab for all Occupational Therapy students as they learn occupational therapy theory and practice for adult and geriatric populations. Students in the Speech-Language Pathology program have used the lab for simulated experiences with clients, and the Blindness and Low Vision Studies Vision Rehabilitation Therapy program uses the lab as its primary classroom and training facility, teaching students adapted activities of daily living skills in the areas of adaptive food preparation and home management.

Orthotics & Prosthetics Lab

Located in the West building, the Orthotics & Prosthetics Lab provides incoming students with the campus's newest state-of-the-art training spaces and technology. The lab consists of three sections. The Clinical Advancement Room maximizes the student learning experience through real-world exposures. The Tinker Lab allows students to familiarize themselves with commonly used components, tools, and materials within orthotics and prosthetics. The Machine Shop is equipped with eight Trautman sanders, drum sander, drill press, band saw, sewing machine, and state-of-the-art ventilation and dust collector systems for students to make modifications to their patient model's orthotic and prosthetic projects.

Vestibular Audiology Lab

Doctor of Audiology students have access to four labs equipped with state-of-the-art equipment dedicated to hands-on learning. The vestibular lab's equipment includes several videonystagmography units, a rotary chair, and computerized dynamic posturography. Through their course of study and clinical training, students also have hands-on training with Video Head Impulse Testing, Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials, Virtual Reality devices, and other vestibular tests. In addition to diagnostic testing, the vestibular lab is used to give students hands on training in vestibular rehabilitation techniques.

Audiometric Principles, Electrophysiology and Hearing Labs

The Audiometric Principles Lab is equipped with technology commonly used in the profession including four audiometric booths and three different audiometers, which allows groups of eight students to be in the lab at one time. One of four practice labs on campus, the Audiometric Principles Lab is where students learn the foundations of testing and practice. There are also two stations for OtoSim - a computer-based program to view pathologies of the ear, slides of histology and practice tests and exams for otoscopy, and identification of locations. The Electrophysiology and Hearing Technologies Lab also has equipment to practice Auditory Brain Response (ABR) and Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs), mid- and late-latencies and much more.

Clinical Assessment Lab

The Clinical Assessment Lab provides an environment to gain the necessary skills for patient evaluation across multiple platforms. Training mannequins and simulators are used for clinical assessments for students to practice techniques they will utilize in real clinical practice. Students learn to select, interpret and evaluate clinical laboratory tests and imaging and other diagnostic tests used for treating and managing patient needs. Physician Assistant and Occupational Therapy students are able to develop hands-on experience using electronic health records with faculty guidance within this lab. Optometry students also specifically use it for practicing blood pressure and injections in addition to the program's Systemic Medicine and Disease course.

Standardized Patient Simulation Lab

The Standardized Patient Simulation Lab, which contains collaborative learning environments, eight patient examination rooms and a hospital room to simulate a real-world clinical environment, utilizes trained laypeople and actors as standardized patients to role play a variety of healthcare scenarios. This allows students to directly experience differential diagnosis and practice their communication and professionalism skills. Once patient evaluation skills are gained, students can apply them in the adjacent Patient Simulation Lab. Student experiences are videotaped for feedback and review purposes. In addition, the space includes a conference room for post-simulation student debriefing, a simulated patient lounge, and a video control room.

Research Lab

Research is an integral part of the Salus at Drexel mission and there are both fundamental and intrinsic benefits to a strong research program at the University. The labs contain equipment such as a biosafety cabinet, shakers, incubator, confocal microscopes and chromatography cabinets. The University supports the faculty and students' efforts to conduct research and other scholarly activity by creating an environment that promotes a culture of excellence in research designed to improve health and reduce illness and disability. As an R1 institution, multiple researchers at the University have grants from the National Eye Institute, the Department of Defense, the State of Pennsylvania, as well as industry, and private foundations.

Lombardi Classroom

Classrooms at the Elkins Park campus feature state-of-the-art electronic technology that enhances the classroom experiences. The furniture in most classrooms is easily arranged to allow for group work. The Lombardi Classroom is the largest on-campus classroom and can be split into two if needed.

Clinical Procedures Lab

The Clinical Procedures Lab is equipped with stations for each student that replicate the necessary equipment used by practicing optometrists for vision screenings and comprehensive eye examinations. It features state-of-the-art ophthalmic equipment and electronic health record capabilities to prepare Doctor of Optometry students for a seamless transition into patient care at The Eye Institute. The lab also includes 34 fully equipped optometric bays, video/camera slit lamps for demonstration, and mounted live feed video cameras for integrated instruction. The expanded design allows students to have enhanced access to the space and provides them with optimum clinical education.

Virtual Reality Simulation Lab

The Virtual Reality Simulation Lab features state-of-the-art VRmagic equipment and software for virtual retinal examinations. The lab includes stations for indirect and direct ophthalmoscopy. Each station is equipped with a touch-screen monitor, and a model patient head. The indirect ophthalmoscopy stations also include a wearable headset with a display monitor. The software has various modules to test a variety of skills such as properly using an ophthalmoscope, finding shapes on the retina, identifying retinal pathologies, and using a case-study format to examine a model patient. The lab also can have the simulator projected for group learning, further enhancing the students' understanding of the cases and concepts.

Pennsylvania Ear Institute

The Pennsylvania Ear Institute, known as PEI, is the on-campus clinical facility for the Doctor of Audiology program. PEI's array of adult and pediatric services includes comprehensive hearing evaluations, vestibular and balance assessments, tinnitus management, and hearing aid solutions. During the first semester, Doctor of Audiology students are introduced to the clinic with observations at PEI. By the second semester, students take their knowledge a step further by practicing hands-on skills and conducting basic tests - all under the supervision of PEI's expert audiologists.

Speech-Language Institute

The Speech-Language Institute, known as SLI, is the on-campus clinical facility for Master of Speech-Language Pathology students. SLI offers services to treat adult and pediatric clients with speech, language, feeding and swallowing difficulties. Speech-Language Pathology students are assigned to clients during their first week of classes and provide weekly therapy services under the supervision and guidance of trained clinical educators. SLI also offers specialized support groups for clients, parents, and caregivers - focusing on intervention and techniques to improve communication.

Hafter Student Community Center

The Hafter Student Community Center offers a place for fitness, fun, exercise and sport. The gymnasium is used for campus events and student indoor sport competitions. It also hosts the student organization offices and student lounge.

Sensory Garden

Outside of the Hafter Center, the Sensory Garden adds value to the teaching and learning environments for each of the programs and provides strategic outreach for children and adults within the local community who have sensory deficits. The space includes passive and calming places, while others are designed to stimulate activity or be used in therapeutic or educational programs.

The Eye Institute

Located in the Oak Lane section of Philadelphia, a few miles from campus, The Eye Institute, known as TEI, is the clinical teaching facility for students in the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. TEI's services include routine eye exams, vision therapy and specialty care for glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, cataracts, neuro-ophthalmic disease and other eye health disorders. TEI is also home to the William Feinbloom Low Vision Rehabilitation Center, which provides low vision and vision rehabilitative services - and has a full-service optical center.

TEI - 2nd Floor

The second floor of TEI houses Oak Street Health, a primary care health facility, Pennsylvania Ear Institute satellite office, a clinical research wing, appointment call center, administrative and faculty offices, a classroom, two conference rooms, and a café. Optometry students start observations at TEI beginning their second year. By the end of that year, students will assist with patient care under the guidance of faculty optometrists. Patient care is also provided at TEI's satellite location in Chestnut Hill.
