Who We Are
We are the Virginia Army National Guard. Part of what makes us unique is that we have not only a federal mission, but also a state mission. That means we respond to both domestic emergencies at home and support overseas combat operations.
We take a lot of pride in our work and our history, which dates back to the founding of Jamestown. Today, more than 7,000 Soldiers serving in the National Guard live, work and serve in communities across Virginia.

What We Do
The Virginia Army National Guard is a team of Citizen-Soldiers, ready to serve our communities and our nation. We balance civilian careers with military service, typically training one weekend a month and two weeks a year.
When you enlist, you'll choose from a selection of diverse career paths, gaining valuable skills that will last a lifetime. Most serve locally, but when duty calls, we're prepared, whether we're responding to disasters here at home or deploying overseas.

Our training is hands-on, intense, and built for the challenges Soldiers face in action. From day one, Basic Combat Training instills discipline, fitness and essential combat skills. Soldiers master land navigation, learning to traverse tough terrain with just a map and compass. Marksmanship training sharpens precision and ensures battlefield readiness. Ruck marches build stamina, mental toughness and resilience.

Virginia Army National Guard History & Legacy
The Virginia Army National Guard dates back to 1607, when Jamestown settlers formed militias. Since then, Virginia's citizen-soldiers have played a pivotal role in shaping history - from securing independence in the American Revolution to storming the beaches of Normandy during World War II.
